Asthma in the News

by KathrynR1402Comment Published at 14:3714:370 comments0 comments7 Visits7 VisitsReport

Just heard on the news that David Beckham has asthma. The newsreader then went on to say that asthma is common in top athletes and sportspeople, and that about 20% of the last British Olympic Team have asthma to some extent.

Good to know that the days of kids having to skip sports because of their asthma are probably gone, if their asthma can be well controlled like Mr Beckham's anyway.

Asthma & Eczema

by KathrynR1402Comment Published at 13:4413:440 comments0 comments17 Visits17 VisitsReport

Hi! My 6 year old DD1 has relatively mild asthma & eczema. The asthma seems fairly well controlled, and she is fairly good about taking her brown inhaler (though she rarely takes her blue - had it at school the whole of last year and only asked for it once, which either means she didnt need it or that she didnt WANT to ask for it). But she is very resistant about her eczema. She doesnt like the aqueous cream (says it's cold, yucky, etc). We add the bath oil to the bath, which she's ok about. And she will just about let us put on the hydrocortisone ointment she is prescribed. She says she likes scratching. She claims the aqueous cream hurts her face & neck - having checked with an adult friend with eczema this sounds unlikely. She even started bleeding in bed a couple of weeks back, which she's never done before. Normally she has a problem in late winter and is fairly ok in the summer, but this year she's been bad all through. It's SOOO frustrating. I hate to see her hurt herself. I've tried to explain to her that if I saw someone at school scratching her til she bled I'd be very cross and MAKE them stop, but what am I to do to her when she's the one hurting herself? Anyway, I've always threatened her with wet-wrapping since I read about it on Minti. Then a couple of weeks ago she asked to be wet wrapped. The novelty wore off after about a week but by then she had improved SO much. So thank you to those who wrote advice articles - some progress here AT LAST!

Dealing with asthma in children

My son started showing signs of eczema at 12 months of age. This year around the time of his 3rd birthday he went into hospital because he was having breathing problems. He was then diagnosed with asthma.
