can anyone help

by anniebabeComment Published at 15:1015:1017 comments17 comments118 Visits118 VisitsReport

can anyone help there seems to be a plague of cockroaches in our neighbourhood. i would like suggestions that are not expensive (i know you can get the place sprayed) but i dont want that expense and it is in the neighbourhood if not in the state. hubby says regional vic where he is working they are in the soil everywhere!

my concern is now greater because i have found one or 2 in the house whereas before that they seemed to be hanging around the garage and the begola. pleases any solutions. our house isnt very old we had demolished and built from scratch.

but i need some advice gefore they start  in the house because 40 squares is  a lot of area to cover.

do they like wet moist dry areas? is their a site someone can suggest ? i am clean so that doesnt seem to make a difference. are their any old fashioned remedies out there i would be ever so grateful?

cheers annie

(i didnt know whether to ask this on this site or household hints or in my blog?) so forgive me if you dont think this is the appropiate site

Re: can anyone help

If you want them out of the house, good ole baking soda works great, it's enviro and family friendly.  Though it takes a few extra days it does work.  What you need to do is lay a bit around all the water supplies in your house.  Toilets, sinks, hoses for washing and fridge(if you have a water house there) all the pipes that come out of the walls into the cabinets.  It will take a bit a time to spray all the areas, but it's worth it.  The reason being is that the roaches go to the water to drink, and with the baking soda it makes them thirstier, and thus coming in contact more with the baking soda.  but the soda gives them gas and prevents them from drinking...In the end they are killed, but it's much safer then any spray you can buy...Good luck!

Re: can anyone help

It they are the Argentinian breeds, then they are a pest and quickly become a plague.  If they are any of the 500+ native Australian species, leave them be.  They are very clean and actually a benefit to the household, being predators of other insect pests and all.

The difference is usually colour.  The Aussie ones are generally very dark in colour while the Argentinian ones are very pale.

Re: can anyone help

The little beasties like dark warm spots, and yes i had them in the washing at times.... If you spray, make sure you do under the stove, fridge, microwave, washing maching, really anything with motors.... because they go for the warmth, great breeding grounds.... I was a mess when i had the plague in and around my house.... I now live in the suburbs of Adelaide, big change from the country....

Once again..... Good luck Annie

Re: can anyone help

Get a couple of huntsman spiders, they will make short work of them, and they are generally shy and hang up in the corners of the ceiling and don't bother humans.

Find someone that has them and capture them and let them go.  They will eat all night, and soon take care of your cockroaches, and they laze around out of your way all day.

Re: can anyone help

Hi Annie...

It can get a bit confusingas where to such questions....

As for those little beasties..... I had trouble with them abotu 2 years ago, i was living in NSW in a old miners cottage backing to bush land.... They were everywhere, inside and out.... I couldn't find anything that was in my budget to get rid of them.... until one day i was at the stupid market (supermarket) and Mortein Easy Reach Surface Spray was on special... I grab a can, took it home spayed out as much of the house (my houe was big, 4 brm, 2 living) as i could.... the next morning, i had 27 belly up beasties on my floor and over the next six months i still found the odd 1 or 2 beasties sick or belly up.... I always keep it in my cupboard now for the just in case..... I have move from that house and live in another state, where (touch wood) i havn't seen a beastie.....

I know it's not a home remedy, but it's the best i have found.... i have 3 children also and it never seem to affect them.... I have attaced a link to the Mortein site, hope it helps....

Good Luck...

Re: can anyone help

i totally agree with frogie bout that spray. Its really good as it does the job and you can spray outside to get them.If your worried about the kids try doing it when they arent at home so then you have a clear run.

GOOD LUCK WITH GETTING RID OF THEM

Re: can anyone help

Hey Annie,

We are in the same boat, makes me shudder thinking of them.  Like yours ours is a brand new house only 2 year old.  My partner says they must be getting in from outside some how as there are no little cracks or anything that they can hide in.

I have heard that it is because of the drought, they are looking for water.  I found a few websites that might help you click here and here to find out more about the dreaded cockroach and how to get rid of them.

Also go to the local supermarket (I think, maybe bunnings) mortin or baygon do an out door spray that last about 3mths or you can get little baits that lure the ugly things.

Hope this is of some help and you get rid of them soon.

Re: can anyone help

Check out frogies link to morteins website and also check out the professional outdoor spray.  As I said kill everything for up to 3mths.
