Hi everyone,

My name is Sandy and my 6 year old son has itp.  He has a rare case.  He isn't chronic and he isn't acute.  I'm looking forward to meeting other families who have children with itp.

Thank you

so much for sharing this.  I am glad that we have found another family that can help with suggestions and stories

Maybe you could tell us a bit more of his story. What type of ITP does he have?

When my son doug was 1 we took him for his yearly check up.  At that time he was very bruised from head to toe, but didn't think anything of it cause he was always a very active kid.  Well he had his shots and then about a week later developed a 104 fever.  We took him to the urgi=center and they told us he probably had a virus, and that they were going to do blood work.  Well the dr. called back and said that his platelets were at 5,000.  So he sent us back to the hospital where he was admitted for 5 days and given ivig.  That brought his platelets back up and we were sent home.  He had his blood checked every week for 1 month.  Then every month for 6 months.  Every time it came back in normal range.  The dr's told us that he was going to outgrow it, since his numbers stayed high and that he probably got it due to a virus infection.  Well at the age of 2 he had a few bruises on his legs, and i took him in for blood work, and sure enough they were low again.  This time 7,000.  Once again he was hospitalized for a week and given ivig.  Which again brought his platelets up.  The dr's again told us that he wasn't going to get it again.  Well we went 3 years and no symptoms, and then right after he turned 5, which was in may of 2005, he had 1 bruise on his arm that just looked odd to me.  Then i looked over his body and he had petechia all over.  Well took him in for blood work, sure enough it was back.  This time his platelets were at 2,000.  He was admitted again.  While he was in the hospital his platelets went down to 1.  Not 1,0000 he had 1 left.  The Dr. told us that if we didn't bring him in when we did he would have never survived.  So we had to change our lives.  We are now considered having an "ITP" child.  But his is different.  He could go 2 years symptom free or he ould go 10 year.  We don't know.  But we do take precaustions.  During cold and flu season we put him on a diet of things that he cannot eat due to causing your blood to not clot.
I can always tell when they are dropping.  He gets very tired, sleeps at all different times.  He gets very agressive, mean and nasty.  And we just watch him.  And hope they stay up there.

As for now, he has been sick, i know his platelets are dropping, but he is not showing any type of physical symptoms.  Such as excessive bruising.

We take one day at a time.  Our song for our family is "Live Like you were dying"    I don't know what i would have done if i would have lost him.  I cherish each and everyone of my kids.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.  I hope i can offer advice or a shoulder to other families who have children with itp.
