How do I get my 5 week old to stop cat napping?

by n4yComment Published at 20:1920:195 comments5 comments78 Visits78 VisitsReport

My 5 week old daughter has recently started cat napping. She will sleep up to a hour and wake up crying wanting her dummy put back in her mouth. She was sleeping really well untill the last 2 days where she has hardly slept atall.

Night time she sleeps on average up too 3 - 7 hours at a time but day time she is very restless. She seems to be unhappy aswell. She dont like to sit up or be held or be put into her bouncer.... I feel the whole time she is awake she cries... She used to eat really good. Around 130 mls each feed every 4 hours but the last 2 days she is not only cat napping she is only having half her feeds....

Is there something wrong or could it be the heat (it's so hot here)

Anyone with suggestions please help

worn out and depressed mum

Naomi

update on my issue with cat-napping

I went to see my GP this morning and he told me I need to feed her a bit more as she is hungry...

I was giving her 120mls and now need to go up too 180mls...

My doctor said it is why alot of babies cry and dont settle.. I have came home and fed her a 180 ml bottle and she went straight to sleep with out having the dummy...

I feel so bad.. But Im glad it is sorted out..

Thank you too everyone who offered advice..

Naomi

Cat Napping
At about 4 weeks my daughter decided to no longer have sleeps during the day and after 5 weeks of this I finally had enough and called in the specialists. The child health nurse advised me that anything under an hour is just a cat nap and you should try to resettle her.  You should be getting at least an hours sleep between feeds for a breastfed baby, not sure how long with formula. She is probably unhappy and crying because she is overtired. I thought Lorelei was upset and so I was picking her up, trying to feed her etc. when all she really wanted was to be put down and go to sleep. It took about three weeks of a lot of crying to establish a routine again with her. She isn't a fantastic sleeper during the day but we are compensated with at least 7 hours straight at night. I find that she will sleep really well in the morning but not in the afternoon so that's when I go out and do other things that may get her to sleep (walking in the pram and driving).

If it's any compensation there has been some research suggesting that alert babies tend to be brighter later on . Best of luck.

not sure
My baby is now 3 weeks old and power-naps for a few minutes in the middle of her feeds. Very frustrating at 4 in the morning when I want to be sleeping too!
btw - noticed you said depressed. If you think you might be then please talk to someone and get help sooner rather than later.

Maybe when you go for walks ( That's if you do ) Take your baby for just that bit extra walk, or go to a park and stay there and lay or sit her in the shade for about half an hour, then walk her back home. The fresh air will definately tire her out. Hope this helps.
