When you are thinking of names, what criteria do you use? The meaning of the name? The history? Family relationships? Coolness? Rarity?

choosing names
I practiced introducing myself and my husband as "Hi, I'm Elisabeth's mum" and "This is Robert's dad Andrew" until they just sounded right and I knew that that was our baby's name.

My daughters name
I was shopping for a wedding present ofr my husband and the jewellers name was KOBI, when i went home i suggested that name to my hubby but he spelt it COBY, which i thought was better, We both agreed on using rose as a second name which is my first named shortened (rosemary) And now after looking in books of names i cant find her name or any meaning for her, so its one in a million i think...

Criteria...

When we were thinking of names - and I know this is going to sound silly hehe...But...

For boys - We wanted a name that didnt sound 'mean'...  You always tend to get an idea of what a person is like based on their name (at least I do and I find most do! - maybe this is because of people we knew with that name throughout our lives?)...So when we thought of a boys name, we tried to picture him - if the name sounded 'mean' (hehe) we didnt like it!   and...

For girls - We wanted a name that didnt sound....erm...'slutty'  hehe...  (I told you this was going to sound silly !) - I always get an idea of what a girl is like by her name and if her name made her sound 'bit*&y' or 'slutty' we didnt like it!

For both boys and girls, we wanted proper 'nice' sounding names - A name that would make you think 'oh what a proper little boy/girl' type of name if that makes sense! hehe

baby names

When I was thinking of names for my baby, they had to pass a couple tests,
1: The stripper test... does it sound like the name of a pole dancer? If it does, it's out (Lily barely passed, according to her father)
2: The banker test... can you imagin someone in a powerful position with that name? That's why I gave Lily the strong middle name Addison, just so she has a choice when she is older. Some names just command more respect than others.
3: The nick name test... if you hate the name Vikki for instance, don't name your daughter Victoria, or you'll be fighting her entire childhood correcting people.

Peace

I really dont know what made me choose the name i did really someone just suggested to me as a joke and i actually liked it so now i have Saturn. And he is named after the god of agriculture; not the car or the planet. I am a pagan and i always wanted my children to reflect my heritage. plus i have a rare name as well and i think it is great to feel like a one of a kind.

Being a teacher I have strong feelings attached to particular names and I have also seen what can be done to kids with unusual names. With this in mind I wanted something different that I was not likely to encounter in my classes and form specific ideas about but also not that 'out there'.

We decided on Lorelei Rose for our daughter. She was original going to be Charisma Jane but as the pregnancy progressed it just didn't feel right. Lorelei is actually an old German name and Rose just seemed to fit with it. If we have a boy his name will be Perrin Elijah or Xavier after a character in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. My husband really likes it and it has definately grown on me. Different but not out there. It actually means traveller in Latin.

Baby Names
When my daughter was born my husband was the one to come up with her name, since I had a name picked for if we ever had a son and told him he could pick hers. Her name is Calista Vanese and I named our son Damian Cole. We both love our kids names and the fact that no one around where we live has those names. Only problem is alot of people we know hate their names, but that doesnt bother us we love them and as long as they dont say anything to our kids we'll be fine with it.

How Nicholas, Angela and Emily got their monikers!!
When we found out our first child was a buy, I really liked the names Nicholas and Alexander, but coouldnt decide which one was going first, and I also wanted him to have his fathers first name as one of his names as well. Then my partner told me that on his side of the family, the men had always been given either Robert or Alexander in the names, after a well known composer he is decended from, so Nicholas Alexander Dean came from that. Our first daughter, Angela Violet Jenny, has Angela as a name as its not an unusual name but it isnt very commonly used, and Violet came from her great grandmother on her dads side. Our second daughter was named Emily as it was a name we could agree on first of all(!) and it was also the name of my mums grandmother, and her two middle names, Sandra and Clare, are the middle names of mine and my partners mums.
So sorry for the ramble but theres the story!!!

With our first child we just wanted a name that sounded good with my partner’s last name, after many arguments about choosing our daughters name; I pretty much had enough and told him that I really don’t care what we name her.

In the end he chose Crystal Lee (Lee is my mothers middle name).

That was the last time he had any input in naming our children.

Kurt Jason was named after Kurt Cobain as I was totally in love with Nirvana at the time (still am) and Jason is his god-fathers name.

Our third son I named Trae Bailey, Trae was a name that I had loved since I first seen the movie Boyz in the Hood and Bailey I chose as I just really like how it sounds when you say his whole name.

Phoenix Rose…..I was 5 months pregnant with our bubs at the time and one day out of the blue the name just came to me if that makes any sense.

With our 5th bubs I searched long and hard for a name that would define my idea of perfection which I found (well in my opinion it is perfect) and that was Ethan Cace (pronounced kay-see).

With our last baby I wanted a name that was different, yet beautiful and I think I managed to achieve that when I named our precious daughter Kayten Sydney.

Unusual!
When I met my hubbie at age 15 he said my first son will be called Royston!  I laughed!  However he explained why (his grandpa who he had been very close to before he died) & after 14 years I agreed.  I thought it would be very unusual but have since discovered many older Roys are actually Royston.  He is the only male in that generation & carries a family name.

For my daughter we again took a family name but altered it - Isobella (Bella 4 short).  I'm very glad she was a she as we could not agree on a second boy's name.  We both agreed it should be meaningful - a good meaning, or after a person we liked - but that's all we agreed on (the family names left we didn't like).  We also tried to avoid one with the same initial (hell for mail) or too similar a sound.  It also had to be unusual - as Royston & Jack sounds odd!  One last criteria for us was nicknames (watch initials!) & how the name sounds when you call them outside!

My niece was named after my sil's fave ballet as she's a dancer - the rest of this generation's names came from books - but they are all nice & suit them!

Sorry to rave!
Katherine

We had always wanted the name Nathan for a boy, it being quite a rare name in the UK at the time.  I got pregnant after we had emigrated, we had a boy, called him Nathan (Naith or Nate for short) and found it to be a quite popular name here.

Our daughters name was quite different, we puzzled over names all through the pregnancy.  If she had been a boy, that was quite easy, she would have been Jayston.  However, out popped a little girl and suddenly Jaylene (Jay for short) sounded just right.  Don't know where that name came from but it fitted her to a tee.  Have never met anybody else with her name although I have been asked by other new mums if I would mind if they  used that name too.

It was important to me that both our children have names that could be shortened as mine can't and growing up I longed for a pet name/nickname.

Kahlia
I thought I had made it up!!  But I hadn't.  Have heard of a few girls named Kahlia who are older than my daughter.  I really liked Karlee but thought perhaps when she got older she might want a more mature name so we picked Kahlia (car-lee-a)or Karlee for short.

Ezekiel
Our little boy is called Ezekiel (from the Bible).  We actually didn't particularly look for a biblical name but went to babynames.com and checked out names from different cultures.  We liked all of the Hebrew names.  My daughter wanted Zedekiah, which I do like but we all decided that we liked Ezekiel. (Ee - zeek-ee-el)

Just another tip for baby naming, if you wrote down your name say "billy" and your spouses name is " frances" you could take letters from each name and create a name like " brance" or "frilly" obviously they are not that good but you get my idea. My freinds child was called Teonie, after her father Tony and mother Leonie.I think it was a great name.

We are still trying to agree on names for our baby but we still have plenty of time as she is not due until 2007.

One bone of contention between us is that in my husbands family the name Thomas has been used a lot (it is my father in law's name, my husband's middle name and the middle name of his nephew).

Andrew is keen to follow on with this and have Thomas as a middle name if we have a boy.  However, I'm not keen (believe it or not I had a hamster named Thomasina and it's put me off the name for our baby) and would like to take a middle name from my side of the family instead, with Brian or Joseph as a middle name.

For girls I like the more unusual names and Andrew is more traditional.  I suggested Sabra, Isola, Claudia and Romilly and all of them have been turned down flat.  We might finally have agreed on Elisabeth as the perfect name now because although it is traditional it can be shortened or changed to so many different pet names, anything from Ella and Libby to Lilith and Leisl, so it satisfies us both.

When I was pregnant with our first daughter about when I was about six months pregnant our stereo would only play one song. It is from a band called Butt hole Surfer......( I know  )but the main chorus was nuh nuh nuh Kristina and it played for months so we decided if it was a girl we would name her Kristejna (that is the original spelling of Kristina). Plus I have an odd name and know how nuch touble you have growing up with one so we wanted tradional names but ones that were a little different. So our second daughter was named Adriana (Adi for short).

My eldest son, PATRICK-DARRYL, was an easy name for me to choose. I wanted him to have a strong Irish name, and to be named after an uncle who had recently passed away. My daughter was a little different. My ex wanted her to be named Chevy, I however did not want her to be named for a truck, so I made a new name SHEVROLEIGH (pronounced Shev-ro-lee). No-one else has it, and it doesn't sound like a vehicle. When I was pregnant with my youngest, a friend who worked with my husband, asked that if we have a boy, he be named after him. I had alot to think about, because his name is Dragan. Did I really want my baby to be named Dragan? We did some research, and found that it is a Serbian name (quite popular there) and it means Dear One. Now that he is 8 years old, JOHN-DRAGAN really does suit him.

First criteria in my opinion is you have to like the name.  Honoring a relative is always nice, but I've heard of 'spats' over why one was chosen over another.

I like older names - with character.  Like clothes, names go in an out.  Check out a good site - lots of fun references - TheTop100BabyNames.com.

This site does a pretty good job of putting a lot of ideas at your fingertips.

My criteria are that

  1. I have to like the name, even in 20 years time. So that if my child doesnt like it at least i will have no regret for choosing the name.
  2. I prefer a name that is 'different'.
  3. Hopefully a name that suits the personality of the child.  (they say you can sense your childs personality when you are pregnant - I think I could in hindsight)
  4. It has to have a good meaning.  Something to define personality and character.

There were some great baby naming sites that I came across while I was searching for interesting names with meanings that I liked.  www.babycentre.com was great and covered so many different topics.

My husband and i also argued through the pregnancy over names the only thing we could agree on wasif it was a boy its middle name would be the same as his Anthony and that we wannted something different that couldnt be twisted some horrible way so my child would be teased and i t had to have a nice meaning not like caleb which i was alway brout up to believe meant dog or mark that meant trouble maker or alway getting into trouble.

Neway he want names like axle or raine for a boy I thought axle made hime sound like a grease monkey and raine a drip. And for a girl he wanted cindel and he couldnt think of a middle name and i wanted SKYLAR ROSE needless to say we had a girl and after seeing all the pain i went through giving birth to her hubby agreed i could name her as i saw fit after all.

and do u know what she lived up to her name she flew out head shoulders and half the after birth in one contraction she even hit the end of the bed before the nusres could catch lol I glad the bed was there!!!

Baby Names
I learned the hard way that naming after family has it's consequences.  I named my 1st born Tabitha Helen.  Tabitha because it's a really pretty name that isn't heard often.  My name is Jennifer and my husband's is Jason...2 of the most common names there are.  Helen, is after my Nana (my mother's mother) who passed away 3 months before Tabitha was born.  I hadn't seen my Nana in 2 years before she died and I felt really awful about that, especially since I later learned that she had been really looking forward to seeing her great-granddaughter.  Of course, my grandmother (my dad's mother) took it personally and had a fit about it.  So, my husband and I decided we weren't going there again.  We chose Bailee for our 2nd girl because it's pretty also, and because, again, it isn't heard often.  We chose Autumn for her middle name because it's our favourite season and it flows with her first name.  Everyone else's methods for choosing names sounds really great too.

My baby's name

When choosing my daughter's first and second name, I pretty much held the reigns.

We agreed that our daughter should have her father's last name as a symbol of respect and commitment since me and my boyfriend aren't married yet.

Her first name we both had to agree upon and we decided upon Summer as we both liked it (thanks to the OC). It's not an overly common or rare name.

Her second name was entirely my choice since she has her father's surname. I'm Chinese born in Australia and wanted to choose a Chinese name for her even though I don't actually speak the language. I consulted a few relatives that did know a thing or two about the language but in the end did my own research. I ended up with Mei Xia (pronounced may sia) then played with the spelling to make it Meisha. Mei means beautiful (a common Chinese name) and Xia means glow of the sunrise/sunset. I believe her second name is definitely unique yet easy enough to pronounce.

My choice to give my daughter a Chinese middle name was partly to do with tradition since I have an anglosaxonised Chinese middle name and partly because she is the first of her generation on my side of the family and I wanted to honor my heritage by exercising my rights to create the first name (Mei for girls) which will be used for all the girls of Summer's generation that will surely follow.

If you are interested in how the Chinese name their children, you can send me a private message.

Lol I use to know two men called Ferkin and Gerkins, honest to god this is no joke! They were brothers from the middle east, they emigrated to Australia as children.

I my self just feel my pregnancy and as time goes on a special name starts to get my attention and thats how I named my children, weather it was a special person in my life at the time, eg: my second son Phillip is named after a 16yr old boy who was such a nice kid that i named mine after him and guess what? My son is a nice kid too! All my children have names that mean some thing either to me of my husband at the time our babys were born, and my children love to hear the stories attached to their names it gives them a special feel for their names, where as some kids hate there names lol

My partner and i decided the most important thing for us when we were thinking of names was 'what could the name be made into? could the name we chose be made into a horrible nickname which could scar them for life? What do the initials of the name spell? His family has a tradition of giving the son's the dads name as a middle name, but my partner didn't want that, so we also had to listen to family whinge. But we listened to ourselves (it is our baby after all) and finally decided on Oscar James. We hadn't heard of Oscar very much, but the minute we had him, oscar's were coming out of the woodwork! but it suits him to a tee

Ailish means Truth
My Mum surprised us today by having a lovely Name and meaning print sent to us she had made especially for us in Qld. (she's travelling around Aust).

It even has what she will be like as a person ie.  Ailish is energetic and empowered. She can appear to be a crusader. She does not give her word lightly. She is the defender of the less fortunate. She is not easliy side-tracked or led astray (big sigh of relilef) Her priovate life is sacred to her. She may have several endearing qualities .....and so on.     Isn't that a nice present.

I am a video game junky and first heard the name raya from a video game a long time ago and when I found out that I was having a baby I was watching some cheesy sci-fi movie with my husband and one of the characters in the movie was named raya. When I heard the name I said to my husband that if we have a girl we are naming her raya and that was that. Now it was alot harder trying to pick a name for a boy. I really liked seven and salem. But we had our girl. But I was just talking about names the other day and if we have another little I want to name her willow. I just thought it sounded so cute and elfie..

And like allyp said too i also couldnt find a meaning for raya anywhere online.

dating Criteria
When my husbend and i were just starting to get serious during the dating game, I told him that my first born daughter was going to be called Ailish-Jayde so if he didn't want his first borjn daughter called that, he'd better start looking for someone else.  Lucky for all of us he loved the name.  I got Eilish from a documentry of conjoined twins in Irelande when I was 21.  The story didn't have a full on happy ending, but I just adored the name, and I chose jayde because I thought E.J. for short was pretty cool.  When I was pregnant though, Brett said that Eilish was too much like Eye Lash and she might get teased (though personally I can think of worse names than being called an eyelash but......), so I comprimised and changed it to Ailish instead.  Both are gaelic Eilish is Gaelic for Elizabeth and Ailish is Gaelic for Alice.

We have Ailish-Jayde Lunam..................Know one spells or pronounces Lunam right ever, so the poor child is doomed for a futre of spelling and correcting........she can reep her revenge on her own kids.
From
Michele Antoinette...................yeah one L and couldn't spell the 2nd name till I was 10.

My husband and I drew straws on who would name our 1st baby he won so he got the choice! I got to choose for our second boy - not that I thought I'd ever ever have another one. I found it really difficult at first so much to choose from, then friends beating you to the post with a name you liked. I heard a name of a horse racing around the place that had a nice ring to it - Aidan James, not too out there at all. by the way not a bad horse, maybe no world beater but not a disgrace

My husband and I have always been big movie buffs so when I found out I was pregnant the first time we started thinking of movies we had seen with characters names or the actors real names.  We had Natalya (from a james bond movie) Michelle (for her middle name - a name my husband likes) if it was a girl.  And Liam (from Liam Neeson) Richard (for his middle name - my fathers name) if it was a boy.  Our first child was a girl.  Then when I was pregnant with my second we stuck with Liam Richard for the boy.  Our third child was a boy and we named him Corbin (from the movie fifth element)  Robert (for his middle name - after my husbands grandfather).

Criteria

My sons first and second name is Christian Digger My husband wanted Digger for his name but I had to put my foot down on that.I wanted either Soul ( a Danish name) or Christian. We could not come to an agrement though. So I dicided to comprimise( and Digger was starting to grow on me). So I waited until my hubby was holding our baby and said so how about Christian Digger ,my answer was OK.I didn't think Soul Digger would be to good.

Tradition
My husband's family (father's side) has a tradition of naming the first born male with Henry. It can be either the first or the second name, so in that regard, our decision is made even before our son was born. We only had to come up with a name that will go nicely with it. As for that part, my criteria is that it shouldn't be too common and should go nicely with Henry. My husband and I came up with about 4 names and chose Matthew as the first name. When Matthew was born, a few nurses in the hospital said that he does indeed look like a Matthew.

Baby names
We adopted Izzy, so she came with a name.  Isabel Marie, I think she's her own person and that fits her.  I like her nickname, Izzy.  It sounds tough, like she's a gangster.  Just kidding, we could have changed her name and but she is who she is and her parents although unable to care for her still gave her that name.

I picked out Cadence after I saw a movie that I really liked. I just thought that it would sound neat if i had a baby girl(which i did) And also, I wanted something that wasn't in the family already. I do like people naming people after family, but I wanted to do something different. Now, If I had a boy, his name would of been Maddox(not because of Anglie Jolie, I never knew her boy had that name until last month) and his middle name would of been my husbands middle name(his fathers first name).. pretty neat I thought! Anyways, my daughter's name spells out CAP.. pretty cool lol!! I tried to find a meaning for her name, but nothing came up whenever i typed in her name.. but that's ok.. its a rare name and i really love it!!

If I remember my senior school music classes (vaguely) I think Cadence is a musical term similar to melody.  It is a beautiful name for a little girl and I've never heard of anyone else with the name.

Cadence
I believe, in art anyway, cadence is the lyrical rythym of a piece of music or poetry.
Very pretty!
