Mosquito bites

by cheekymonkeyComment Published at 04:5704:572 comments2 comments50 Visits50 VisitsReport

Hi all, just thought I'd put this here. I've had a real bad prob with mozzie bites on grub this year, he swells up terribly and they take about a week to reduce in size. Well, finally found an excellent solution.  No mozzie sprays etc

Went to the health food shop and they have a product called Mozzie Free. It's a vitamin b solution. So I give him one dose/day, any of the bites he had reduce to virtually nothing overnight, and after taking it for a week, they mozzies won't go near him.

Though other people might like to know about it.....

Preventing tooth decay

by supertoothComment Published at 02:2402:240 comments0 comments36 Visits36 VisitsReport

Celery cleans teeth after eating.

Tooth decay has long been shown to be the result of acid demineralisation of tooth resulting from plaque bacteria and carbohydrate.

You can see plaque on teeth with food dye used to colour icing on cakes.

Chewing celey string after eating helps saliva remove plaque from gum margins and trapped food from between teeth and inside grooves on chewing surfaces where the brush cannot reach. It helps saliva neutralise acid and repair demineralised tooth.

Children with Aspergers

by RACCComment Published at 17:5217:521 comments1 comments77 Visits77 VisitsReport

Hi everyone,

I need some Help. I have a daughter (nearly 8 years old). At the age of 18 months or so, she was diagnosed with Dyspraxia or similar. As she has grown up, her condition has improved however I believe it has developed into something else. I have a lot of trouble with her mother (my Ex) to try and have her re-diagnosed. My ex is quite happy to go with the original diagnosis of 6 years ago.

I was wondering if there are any other parents on this forum who have children with Aspergers who could enlightne  me as to what symtoms to look out for and how to handle it.

Cheers

Bloating

by seabreezeComment Published at 03:1303:134 comments4 comments1629 Visits1629 VisitsReport
Does anyone suffer from a bloated stomach? I know they say food alergies etc. cause it, I have tried eliminating all kinds of food etc. and still don't know whats causing it, some days I look like i am 6 mths pregnant, and other days (not very often) my stomach seems quite normal not bloated at all, and then other days I find it feels flat, and i feel so good. but it can be so annoying, the bloating because its so difficult to know how to dress, i tend to have to wear loose clothes, otherwise it would be so obvious that my stomach is bloated. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My mother has breast cancer - anyone else?

by AussieeComment Published at 16:4816:482 comments2 comments49 Visits49 VisitsReport

My mum has breast cancer.  She is 64.  She isn't handling it well, and wants no contact with me till her treatment is over.  She had a lumpectomy and is having radiotherapy.

I am at a loss and would love to speak with others who are going through BC with their mums?

Why doesn't mum want to speak to me? I bought a book called 'my mothers breast', to learn, to understand - and I was apparently interfering.. seriously thats it in a nutshell - its pretty sad - she lives in another state.

Giving up Smoking - no preachers thanks

by mrsbrown4701Comment Published at 23:5923:592 comments2 comments28 Visits28 VisitsReport
I AM an EX-Smoker...( i haven't had one for 19months)  and I am the first to admit ex-smokers are often the best at preaching (or worst as it may be).. but you know what I mean? The most forceful). I stive and hope I am not one of those, although I do encourage people who are struggling with giving up or even considering it.
I know from experience, people forcing their anti smoking opinions on you do more harm than good quite often. I can't tell you how often I saw a antismoking ad on TV and instanly went for my pack.
I had smoked for over 15 years and had a few decent attempts and several more half hearted attempts at giving up... but still the habit could not be kicked.
Then I gave up for no real particular reason and I found it so easy it made me wonder why I couldn't do it before... in the last 19 months I have had some hindsight and thought I could share it here and maybe encourage someone to stick it out, consider giving up, or just be supportive to someone you know who is struggling with it.

My number one rule in hind sight: You have to be ready and committed and true to YOURSELF. In all honesty, if you have to fight the habit with every inch of your existance every moment of the day, you are not ready to give up... and as soon as you let your guard down the first thing you are going to do is pick up a smoke. Stop trying, and come back and try again later, in a different mind set.

Well that was the only "RULE"... the rest is only personal experience and possibly can be taken as advice to try...

I changed my day to day habits. I had always smoked outside only, and never in the house. So I waited until the coldest point of winter, when it was uncomfortable to go outside with out deliberately rugging up, and promised myself I would only go outside if it was to play with the kids, hang out the washing or go somewhere.
Which led to my next promise... I promised myself to leave my smokes at home. And not smoke in public, I also added to this, not to smoke infront of the kids.
I didn't go cold turkey. I had in the past tried everything from cold turkey to gums, patches and even Zyban! This time I went back to the patches and promised myself to stick with the entire programme as specified in the leaflet that came in the box of patches. As I used to spend alot of time outside, reading the catalogues or watching the world go by in my "little spot" where I had an ashtray and a chair.... I moved the chair (I actually put the chair away in a shed) and ditched the ashtray. My smoking spot no longer existed. I tried to get in the habit of when ever I used to go for a smoke, I went in the opposite direction (inside and to the kids rooms) and played or read with them for 5 or 10 minutes instead. I drank heaps more water, and left a bottle of water where I used to leave my cigarettes.
Over the time it took to work thru the "patches program" I gradually had reset my habitual routine.... I also found myself spending a lot more time online, on auction sites listing stuff from around the house, getting involved in forums, which I had never done until that point, and generally distracting myself with being busy doing things that are not smoker friendly.
I found at the end of the patches program I had lost pretty much all the physical urges and also had not chemical cravings either..... and had done it with out really thinking hard about it....
I think when you get to the stage where you can say, "Hey, it's been 2 or 3 days since I even thought about having a smoke." It is a fair indication you are getting somewhere. But don't let your guard down there...keep deliberately forming new habits to replace the old one.

So what is your story? What made you read all this. Would you like to share? Please do!

I just saw this Oxycise program in the magazine First and I'm wondering if anyone has tried it?  I don't know alot about this but it seems to help people strengthen, tone, and lose weight all with deep breathing!  I was thinking about getting the dvd's but don't want to fork that cash out unless I talk to some "real" people about it first.

Please don't put off a checkup with your GP!

by pumpkinComment Published at 19:2619:262 comments2 comments60 Visits60 VisitsReport

I was treated for cervical cancer while 8 weeks pregnant and am now a very happy and healthy mother. I share my story this week in the Post Newspapers, as a gentle reminder to all women to have regular health checkups.

I am a  member of GAIN (Gynaecological Awareness Information Network Inc), a community based organisation, comprised of dedicated women, many of whom have endured the trauma of being diagnosed and treated for gynaecological conditions. We have two events coming up in Perth in the next few months. The aim for both events is to attract attention to women’s gynaecological issues and to encourage communication flow between those affected by gynaecological illness, their families, their support network and their health care professionals.

  • The first of these events is a cocktail evening scheduled for Thursday 10 August and is G.A.I.N’s major fundraiser event for the year. G.A.I.N is pleased to announce that the guest speaker will be 2006 Australian of the Year Professor Ian Frazer as he takes us “Beyond the Research” with his ground breaking vaccine that will revolutionise women's health across the globe. Ian has developed a vaccine to prevent HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) – the virus that can lead to cervical cancer.  It is the eighth most common cancer in Australian women, with more than 1,000 new cases of cervical cancer being diagnosed each year and over 300 women dying from this disease. The Cocktail evening will be held at the UWA Club, 35 Stirling Highway Crawley WA from 6 - 8.30pm, Thursday, 10 August.  Bookings are through BOCS Ticketing 9484 1133.
  • G.A.I.N will then hold the fifth National Gynae Awareness Day on 10 September 2006. This year we will go one step further by bringing research, fact and real life case studies together to promote the awareness through our key message Beyond the Research.  It will be a stunning day full of information sessions, workshops, multicultural entertainment and displays. It will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Sunday 10 September, 10 - 4pm.

Both events are designed to be informative and a lot of fun for everyone!

I really hope that you can join us!

Kind regards

Karen
