i have 3 teenagers still at home (3 already flown the coop) and we have this on going discussion about what level of help is required around the home. I work part time(at least 4 -5 hours a day) and I wonder sometimes if the 3 at home are blind to dishes that need washing or washing that needs to go on the line to dry. Oh for a holiday where I dont have to do anything and they look after me!!!!!!! somehow I dont think that will happen

i know what you mean

i have 9 kids and i feel the only time they notice a mess or dirty dishes is when they want their friends to visit or neeed to use a plate/cup.It doesn't hurt them to help around the house.   How old are your teens, mine are 18,16,14,12then i have 11,8,7,4,21months.

we have a roster in place that the kids are meant to follow and its rotated every monday. It works, even though it takes a bit cajoling at times.

drop a line sometime,it would be great to hear from you.

have a great day

Teenagers

When I worked, I don't any more, I had a daily diary with things to do listed. This is with 2 boys

Empty dishwasher, peel vegetables for dinner, get out washing/off line. Sort into yours, ours. Put yours away, put ours (Dad and mine) on our bed. On sport training days, be ready waithing for me to take you etc etc etc. The main thing is IT WORKED for us.

It can't hurt to try

Teenagers

I agree with you, I think having a written schedule of what you want done, and when, is a good organizational tool and everyone knows that their job is.

Do nothing for them.
If they don't do anything for you, try not doing anything for them. Don't clean up their dishes...they will soon run out and need to clean them to eat off. Just clean 1 dish/plate for you. Don't do their washing...they will soon run out of clothes etc.  I know it will be very hard to do to watch you house turn into a pigsty, but they (hopefully) will soon realise they need to help out a bit.  My mum did this with my younger brother and sister ( 13 and 17 years old) and now they help out more.  They didn't turn into angels, but they put on a load of washing, do the dishes and occassionaly vaccume the floors.  My Brother even cooks dinner sometimes.   I am considering doing the same thing with my kids now.  They are 13, 11 and 3, although I don't expect the 3 yo to do much lol
