Chicken Pox Vaccine

by TrishySwishyComment Published at 11:4811:489 comments9 comments269 Visits269 VisitsReport

I personally feel this vaccine is unneccesary and am a little miffed that our government has decided to provide this vaccine free to everyone in Ontario.  I never wanted to vaccinate my daughter against chicken pox but now I'm worried that she won't be exposed to them at an age that is ideal because the other children will be vaccinated.  Apparently even if you get the vaccine....nobody knows when the vaccination "wears off" (for lack of better words) so then they might be exposed to it at such an age it could be fatal to their health.

How do you feel about this vaccine and would you have your own children vaccinated against chicken pox?

Chicken pox

We dont get the vaccine here in the uk, as Ann above said. I dont see the need for it. I didnt even think it was a serious illness!

I dont see the need for it to be honest, it would be a bit like vaccinating again the common cold~pointless!!!

At this rate, children wont have very good immune systems!

Chicken pox
It is not offered in this country (UK) unless you want to go private and pay for it of course.  Not many people do though!  I dont think its necessary!  I had the vaccine when I was younger as well but then got them anyhow at the age of 7 - it was horrible!  I hear its just worse the older you get from my friends when her daughter got it at 4 and she got it at 40! lol  In normal healthy children its not really an issue though so I am not concerned for my son and actually hope he gets it sometime soon so we can get it out of the way and over with with no complications! hehe I would rather my son had natural immunity to common diseases than to be stuck with a needle so many times throughout his life as he is not a pin cushion!

Chicken Pox Vaccine

Actually, we *do* know that it typically "wears off" within 10-12 years, i.e. when they are pre-teens or adults and suceptible to a more severe infection from it.

My children are not vaccinated for CP and I exposed my daughter to it and she got it. There are an increasing number of parents opting out of this vaccine and I bet you have "chicken pox parties" in your area..most major cities do!

You can check the "find your tribe" forum at http://www.mothering.com/discussions/ for like minded moms who try to organize chicken pox parties.

Chicken Pox Vaccine

Thank-you, I didn't know they knew it wore off in 10-12 years.

I didn't contract chicken-pox till my teens and that was because my sister had just started kindergarden and it went through her class.  I remember being worse off then she seemed at the time and she was "back in the game" before me too.

I'm going to check into the "chicken-pox party" idea when Hayden is a little older...I've heard of people around here doing that too.  What age was your daughter when you exposed her?

my daughter was three or four when she got it. she got it from a friend who is allergic to eggs and therfore can't have the vaccine (it's egg based).

Chicken Pox Vaccine

I used to hear of some moms going to someone's house because the child there has chicken pox and they want their babies to contract it. But you're right, if everyone is vaccinated then there won't be anybody to contract it from at a young age. Chicken pox is a little more dangerous for adults than children.

I am one of those adults that has never contracted chicken pox unfortunately. Before I got pregnant, my OB had to make sure whether I've had it or not and ordered a blood test. It was negative, so I got vaccinated.

It's different to hear about how you contracted "mumps" as a child and not "chicken pox" when for everyone here it's usually the other way around because of our vaccines.

Yes, it is pretty weird. The nurse that gave me the chicken pox vaccine couldn't believe it either. She said it's pretty amazing to have gone through life without ever getting infected by the chicken pox.
