Why give away your power and experience?

I had a friend tell me about her recent birth..........where she was given pitocin, even though she went into labor on her own..........where she was forced to wait to push because they didn'y have a room ready.........where she delivered in an OR because that was the only place availible.........where she needed "permission" to breastfeed and her story was filled with "they allowed me to do this" and "they allowed me to do that".

I was so sad. I can't imagine someone else being in charge of my birth. I can't imagine being in such denial that I would be happy with that. I can't imagine my child coming into the world in chaos in an OR. That makes me so profoundly sad for that baby.

Our bodies are capable. Doctors are trained in what goes wrong. Labor isn't something wrong with you, it's normal. Most problems in labor are CAUSED by the doctors who then fix them and look like heros for it.

I don't understand how smart women can willfully NOT educate themselves about birth. It just seems to be that every woman who knew all the facts would be angry at doctors who performed needless procedures on them. It's weird to me how many women are "happy" with their managed labors.

Empowered birth
Yes, sometimes we need intervention and it saves lives - my son's caesar was a case in point.  However I strongly believe in empowered birth where women are aware of their bodies and the birth process, where they know their choices and can negotiate with the staff delivering the baby, regardless of what happens.  Mind you you need to be prepared and open minded to be able to adjust to whatever birth throws your way.

Why give away your power and experience?

Its not a matter of giving away power.  There are times when having a baby isn't as so called easy as it is meant to be.  There are things that can go wrong and Dr's need to be there to rush in and yes save the day.  Or the other option is giving birth to a dead baby.  This I can assure is not an ending any mother wants.  I know as I have been through that.  There are times when they are unable to help.  They aren't God, they are only human too.

I have had 4 normal deliveries, 3 were induced and my 5th was a caesar, I found the caesar to be great, no labor pains and not alot of pain after wards.  You know it doesn't matter how your baby is born or where it is then end that is the most importabt.  YOU HAVE A LIVE BABY TO TAKE HOME.
