Toddlers on lead

What do you think about it? Personally i dont like those harness type ones that look like something you put on a dog, but I will say that when i bought my pram it had a removable strap that the kids can hold onto. With 3 kids walking beside me to the park I found it very useful for them to all hold on to so that they dont run onto the road etc and it doesnt quite look as bad as a leash lol

"Leash&lead"

Those two words sound so harsh, no wonder why ,many of you see it like walking a dog!!!!

In the UK we call them reins, which i find less harsh.

I think they are a brilliant idea, especially if you are walking near a busy road. Safety first. If your child will walk with you without reins and not running off, then fantastic!! Unfortunately though, accidents happen and children like to think its a good idea to run from mummy!!!

I have bought some, but as my son hasnt decided to walk yet, he is 2O months, So do not know yet if i will need to use them.

Leash v Reins
I have never heard them called 'reigns' before, but I like it!  I think safety first at all times.  I don't care what anybody says, my daughter had one of those backpack monkey ones that was brilliant and I wouldn't have gone anywhere with her without it.  I have found people like to pass judgement.  When she was on a harness - I should say reigns - I would be called to by people saying I treat my child like a dog! I get comments about her being in a car seat like a baby, but we call it a 'safety seat' not a 'baby seat' as it is for toddlers to 8 years, not suitable for babies.  I think it makes a difference what we call something.  From now on I will call them reigns and I'll be telling all my friends this too as I know they get comments.  Thanks for that piece of advice

Toddler leads
I am not against toddler leads at all - every child is different!  I am not there yet though as my son isnt walking, but when that time comes, I would rather he be safe than sorry.  Some children are just fine without them though!!!  In an ideal world we could all say 'well, a mother should teach her child to behave well enough, hold her hand at all times and not run off or run out into dangerous roads, etc'...but as I said, every child is different!  As it is now, when I call my sons name he crawls off (very fast! hehe) away from me! - And he thinks is funny because hes a right cheeky monkey! hehe  He is too young to understand not to run off from me like that, but at least at the moment he is quite happy in his buggy and the trolly at the stores so maybe it wont be an issue for me when we are walking!  I can also imagine it would be hard if you had two young ones, or even 3 or 4!  (people do have tripplets hehe) - you cant keep them strapped in a buggy all the time, they are growing individuals and need to express their freedom as well - but if a toddler lead means that they stay say and unsquished in a road - then so be it I think!

I too think the harness is much like a dog lead.  However, when I took my 2 year old and 3 month old overseas the use of a lead was paramount in my mind.  Luckily before I left I found a wrist strap which he wore to keep in touch with me while I could keep both hands on the pram.  This was great until he learned how to undo the velcro..  Thankfully by that time he was happy to hold my hand almost always as it had become habit to be attached.

Monkey Backpack Harness

They are a GREAT idea if your child stays safe!

My friend bought her daughter a backpack that is a cuddly monkey (the harness) with a really long tail (the "leash"). I think this is a politically correct and friendly alternative and her daughter adores wearing her "monkey". They come in other animals too.

btw - globally delayed??!!??

Monkey Backpack Harness
Monkey ones are fantastic! I had one that could be used in a pram or high chair, but when I took my little miss out on one I had many comments. We went to Brisbane/Gold Coast when she was 2 and a half and I decided (being from rural qld) that she would not be going anywhere without the leash but since people can't seem to keep their comments to themselves about it I wanted one that looked more kid-like.  The helpful lady in the baby shop showed me the monkey backpack one and I bought it.  Instead of glaring at us making comments about "she's a child not a dog" and those types, I found people looking at her backpack and smiling like they thought it was cute.  She only used it when we were on holidays for a month and a couple of times after that going out on day-trips like hiking trails and the likes.  Now at 3 and a half we have since passed it on to a friend who's oldest is 3 and the next 2 down are 16 months and 4 months respectively and use a twin pram.  It's a lifesaver for them too!

using a "leash"

I used a "leash" and my son was proud to wear it. When we first bought it he wanted to show all our friends. I have also used it on a friends child who is globally delayed and no traffic sense at all. Rather have them safe than dead!!!!!

my brother had one
My mum used one for my brother when we were kids.  He was always running off on her!  I would cling to her skirt so she found it hard to run after him.  He ran off on her at Luna Park once and she was terrified for him.  We found him in the end and all was well (after she gave him a good dose of mental mum) but she put him on the lead after that.

I have never liked the idea of these leashes, it reminds me of walking a dog. When my husband was a child,(only very young too) he's mum used one for him and he eventually got sick of it and actually started acting like a dog down town. It really embarrased he's mother, naturally. The hand strap ones attached to the pram isn't so bad though.

car seat belt
I dislike them cuz it makes me feel like I am awlking a dog.  Only used it once in an airport, after that have kept it as useful to attach to my seatbelt when travelling by car and put her int hat so she si also safe.  Works wonders and folds up so small it is no hassle to carry with me.
Peace

Toddler Leashes
i use a toddler leash for my 2 in a half year old. i was not crazy about them before i had kids. i have a double stroller for  my 17 month old twins and a leash for my 2 year old. It works for us. When we got the leash, cydney had no concept of the dangers of cars, now she is starting to get that concept. We use it every time we go out plus she holds onto the stroller so when we are ready to take away the leash she knows that holding onto the stroller is just as important.

I must say, I am not a big fan of those harness ones, but with when my second is born my son will only be 21 months old and he is an active child so it would come in handy for walks.

As I live out of town, it will be easier to have a harness for him and let him walk beside the pram until he wants to get back in his toddler seat. This will then make it easier on me if I need to spend a lot of time in town, or we are going for a walk.
