Could someone please try to explain to me, why as Christians, are we so afraid to stand up for and say what we believe in? I have just tried to answer a question in the general forum about batisms and Christianity and it strikes me that the rest of the world thinks that being a christian is to accept every one and everything, regardless. Batisms are simply social events that require a lot of planning and social etiquette. The point has long been lost. Is it because we have no backbone and dilute our faith down to suite the rest of the world because we are too scared to be seen as different? Muslims stick to what they believe in and have no problem telling others what they believe in. Maybe there is a lesson in there for us. God bless. |

Re: Christian Backbone - or lack thereof.
i was after a general discussion on baptism when posting the question rather then didactic treaties on theology....i did ask to keep religon out of it and was bemused to say the least that you responded with it
our beliefs are personal and experienced in life and even christianity is opened to interpretation for we are not god
its sad that people are still using the term "true christian" like they have a hold on the total truth.. for me personally it shows a lack of social graces
my name is rue and im a christian however i dont own the truth ...i believe in god and having respect for all people ........and not judging others through my interpretaion or experiences but listening and learning
minti is not a platform to convert people to our thinking but a learning journey for parents....backbone? give me humbleness and wisdom any day and on that i build my backbone

Re: Christian Backbone - or lack thereof.
Actually, God specifically tells us to be bold and I believe, to stand up for what you believe in and not allow it to be watered down into what is socially acceptable. Jesus was a true rebel, if you look at what He did. He certainly did not do what was socially acceptable and He challenged people who tried to insist that He conforms. I am sorry if you feel that I have been forcing my opinions onto others, and that Minti is not the place to do this. If we cannot use our faith to live by in all areas of our lives - for me that includes Minti, then my faith is not worth mentioning. I do feel that I have not tried ot force it down anyone's throat, but for some people, this would be the only time they may hear about Christianity and I don't want to face my Maker and have to admit that I had the chance, but because I was too humble, I didn't say anything. If you feel that I have gone overboard and imposed my views on others , please feel free to mail me. I would love to discuss this. Yours in Christ.

Re: Christian Backbone - or lack thereof.
well ofcourse you went overboard and your still swimming!
for the second time when asking for replies to baptism i specifically stated no religious views as the main domain of minti is not a arena for grandstanding our religious views ..do you understand now? its not about what i feel but about you overstepping the mark ...am i upset? not at the least i was just replying to your 'backbone'
if the shoe fits.....................................................................................................
did you know humbleness does not mean silence....great examples of humbleness JESUS....MARTIN LUTHER KING.....BILLY GRAHAM.. MOTHER THERESA ....FRANCIS OF ASSISI>>>>the list could go on for ever
you seem not to be listening how much clearer do i have to be ?? please dont preempt my beliefs by preaching to me or preempt god. when you meet your maker do you think hell get the chance to get two words in??
i think you answered your own question when stating "If we cannot use our faith to live by in all areas of our lives - for me that includes Minti, then my faith is not worth mentioning."

Re: Christian Backbone - or lack thereof.
I think in the UK we've been too used to being in the majority and everyone "understanding the basics", but I think the current generation of parents werent even sent off to Sunday School for their parents to get some peace and quiet like they were in earlier generations, so perhaps now there will be a distinctive generation of young Christians that comes through prepared to say what they believe and why.
I was listening to a Radio 4 prog before Christmas when I had a mini-Eurka moment, when they said that this generation only values peer-to-peer advice (eg like Minti) not messages from on high (eg advertisers, government, doctors, teachers). Though they didnt say it, I thought "or from vicars/evangelists". So we will all have to find a backbone of our own, for what ever we feel passionate about, be it Christianity, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, or whatever gets people nervous/steamed up!
Having grown up CofE, I used to get very steamed up about "Christenings" as they were a major source of income in our church & I thought it very two-faced. Then I went to a church that insisted that parents take the Alpha Course before qualifying for a baptism and I began to see the value of having people come to you.... perhaps I'm being to cynical LOL! But I think in the 1980s most non-church babies that were baptised were because the grandparents wanted it. Horrifyingly enough those babies are now getting old enough to have their own kids, and neither the new parents or grandparents will worry about baptism, so it will probably become a non-issue. Just my ramblings opinion though!
