Mentors

You often hear about programs where famous or successful people mentor young people.  I wish that they could make a program where us older or more experienced mums can sign up to mentor a young single, struggling mum.  Maybe when your own youngest is a year old, and you can share ideas, help, support, and baby stuff etc.  Even look after the child for a couple of hours a week to give them some 'me' time.  There seem to be so many girls out there doing it all alone, and doing it tough with no support from their family and friends.  Perhaps if they felt that there were people who cared, they would feel more confident to make better life decisions.

I believe that what comes around goes around, and if we want to make the world a better place we need to reach out and make a difference in our community.  This is just one way that I think we could do it, without making a huge sacrifice financially, as I don't think most of us would be in a position to do that.

Re: Mentors
There is a program that I volunteered for with the red cross called family support. This not only helps young mums but those with PND and multiple births. It is amazing what giving 5 hours a week does to help these mums and as a volunteer you get heaps out of it too. I call it a win-win situation. Love your ideas though. There is always room for heaps of these programs and with the red cross I know that they have heaps of people on the waiting list which is so sad I think. All mums need support I think.

Re: Mentors
Thanks for the advice.  I am thinking that if it was widely known that there is more support in the community, poor girls might not feel they have to dump their baby and run.

Re: Mentors
Hhhmmm very interesting thought.  perhaps if you approach your local Child health centre and propose your idea they might put up some notices about it and a volunteer group can start.  It will only need one successful group before it catches on world wide.  Good idea.
