Who thinks of these things?

by FlickaComment Published at 17:5917:596 comments6 comments74 Visits74 VisitsReport
I was watching kids eat jelly cups yesterday.  I think it's really gross considering where the gelatine comes from.  Bleh.  But I got to thinking, who was the first person to cut off a cow's hoof and decide to use its contents to cook with? Honestly, who would have done that?  It's always amazing to find out what the ingredients in things are and thinking about the first person who did it.  Like caviar, who thought to eat it? It looks disgusting and tastes foul, and the thought alone should be enough to make people stop and think that it's just gross.  Makes you also wonder about the mentality of a person who decides to be the first to discover that things like gelatine have a use in cooking all sorts of things, both sweet and savoury.

Maybe it also goes back to the day when nothing was wasted.  If you had and animal to eat you would have used every part of it.  Sounds gross but, we are so wasteful now, it makes sense to me.

Caviar is ok... as Ngairi said, it's the same as eating eggs from ducks or chickens, it's just from another animal species.

As for gelatine, apparently its made from boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals. Kosher gelatin can be made with fish bones, and/or beef skins. (Who knew there were different types of gelatine!)

Alternatively you could use agar-agar. You can find these in any oriental food shop... if they don't have it, they should be ashamed of themselves! haha Agar-agar is made from seaweed.

I found the info from http://www.ivu.org/faq/gelatine.html

Re: Who thinks of these things?
Originally, caviar was used by peasants as a meat alternative. Then the Russian Czars discovered it and it become a royal treat. Mind you I can't stand the thought of eating it, I have tried it and it just doesn't sit well with me. But it is no different to eating a chicken or duck egg. When you think about it.
