Could you survive?

by cassaustinComment Published at 20:4820:4816 comments16 comments46 Visits46 VisitsReport

I got thinking the other day (after my electricity bill came in) and i started wondering when i became so relient on technology. I have lived on a farm. Quite the simple life actually. I had no mobile, no dryer, no dishwasher, crappy tv reception and no computer or internet. . . . You know what? I was fine.

SO... with the exception of a stove and a washing machine, could you survive if all your electrical items stopped working?

Re: Could you survive?

I think I would do much better then my husband.. :)  The electricity went out some time ago, but only long enough for me to get the Billy Boiled on the BBQ... Of course by the time hubby got up the electricity was back on and he could make coffee.. LOL I settled for my Billy tea...

I forgot my mother sent me a billy up until that day I needed to boil the water...

I could even wash and dry my clothes if needed.. :)

But I'd be screwed with out my BBQ... :)

Re: Could you survive?

I know I couldn't

I like my creature comforts and a hot cup of tea and an hot radiator in the evenings is one of my theories that is an absolute essential !!!!!!!!

Besides no electric = no computer=no minti=no friends LOL

Re: Could you survive?

I don't think I could to be honest.I'd hate to wash all of our clothes by hand.Plus I don't like the dark and would miss my lights.I like candles but not when there are eerie shadows on walls and stuff.Gives me the willies!!

Re: Could you survive?

Yes, I could survive if ALL electricity and gas ceased to exist at all. I just finished writing an advice along those lines last night. LOL I can cook on a fire and wash clothes by hand as well as live without everything else. Did it for years. I'd miss Minti though.

You survive?  I think not.  If you started living like a caveperson, you'd not be able to have your advice sent to the sinbin all the time! lol.

Re: Could you survive?

I've been the proud owner of a computer for ... 2 years. I'm turning 36 soon. What do you think I did before that? Hmmm??? Puzzle of the year for you to figure out. LOL

Re: Could you survive?

I know I could survive for a few days but other than that I really like my modern conveniences so I wouldn't want to be without them for too long...

Re: Could you survive?

I lived on a property in an area where we were always having blackouts, now they didn't mean just no electricity that meant no water.....  It made life hell but we got used to the interruptions and we learned to live with it......  We used to cook on a little gas camp stove lol and believe me I even cooked baked dinners so it can be done.....  But as for been without internet well no I couldn't, its my only way of staying in touch with my sister and that I could not live without.....  As for a mobile, no problem I have one but it never has credit on it so I don't use it anyway!!!  All these things just make our life more pleasant and easier especially with such fast busy lives x

Re: Could you survive?

Yes no problem, lived with my gran for six months of every year and she had nothing but electric light and a wireless. The worst part was the cold in the morning, and no hot water first thing to wash in, brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Tell you though, the lack of facilities made for a lot of community interaction and sharing.

Re: Could you survive?

yep, even without the washing machine too!  Having modern conveniences is great, make parenting a lot easier, but without them, well, I'd pretty soon get cracking, cleaning and doing washing.

Re: Could you survive?

yes if you don't have it you don't use it.  When we went to the west for 7weeks 4 wheel driving I didn't miss my computer once.  I didn't even use it really for about 2 weeks when we came back now I can't do with out it.  but if I had to yeah sure.

I never use my mobile anyway so that wouldn't be a problem.

The dishwasher I could not live with out when we go up to my in laws, they have no dishwasher and I always wish they had one.  My partner comes from a large family so when they are all there and wifes and kids there is alot to wash up LOL Oh and dry.

I could do it if I had to....  We would love to move to the country one day that is our dream.

Re: Could you survive?

I was the same on the farm. I never had a mobile, and i got used to not using it. To the point that now, i very rarely use the one i have.

I have only ever lived in 1 house that had a dishwasher, so i can definately go without! But i get where you are coming from. Having a large family definately call for one!

The country is awesome. I would love to live out on a property again.
