Flying with toddlers

Since this is a group, I assume that it is ok to post a question.  I traveled over the summer and have encountered a new problem with my youngest son.  I was fortunate on our trip to the states because my older son had a little playmate his age that was sitting next to him.  His mother and I were both relieved we were sitting together as this kept both of the boys occupied.  My other son, who was 2 at the time, constantly was slipping out of his seat and screaming every time I had to put him back in.  He wanted to roam around while the plane was landing and taking off and never wanted to sit down.  I tried the usual things, small little gifts that he could unwrap, playing cars with him etc.  How would you keep a child buckled in?  I am at a loss and next year we are again traveling and I want to be better prepared for this.  I appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks!

Re: Flying with toddlers

Hi,  I have 2 young boys (now aged 5 & 6) that we have traveled with since they were infants.

I think you did great with the gifts, cars and the like. I used to bring play doh (it always worked like a charm,  but I brought it out as a "last resort" item),  but I can't get it through US airport security anymore. How soon are you traveling again?

Do you bring his car seat on the plane with you?  We did that for as long as we could, until they were too big,  that made it easier on the plane,  more comfortable for them (to sleep) especially on long haul flights and more difficult for them to climb out of their seat.

Sometimes even with preparing them ahead of time,  talking about the adventure, the plane ride, staying buckled in your seats .... they will still fight you on it.  That's what 2 is all about,  but it will get easier.

Other things i used to bring, magna doodle, favorite treats - I'm not above bribery during flight time LOL - a really small flashlight (my kids LOVE flashlights), a couple favorite toys ... it's been a while for me since they were that age so I ca't remember all we brought  ...

I hope I've helped a little. :)

Happy traveling.
