Question of curiosity.

by DarkenedAngelComment Published at 03:1103:1124 comments24 comments49 Visits49 VisitsReport

How many other members (besides me when the urge takes over) go to the Needing Votes advice list to read articles that have been rather neglected? There's a lot there, some several weeks and even months old, that only have one or two votes on them.

When you do read advice, where do you most commonly look for it or find it? Appearing on the activity list, your watchlist, keeping an eye on what certain members write, the recent advice list, or something else???

I'm just curious, as there have been a few comments made to me lately about the lack of attention that articles are receiving compared to what they used to get, and I'm wondering if it's because of a change in the way people move around the site and notice things, or if it's because there's so much more advice being brought out to what there used to be that it's over-whelming and too hard to keep up, or if people just aren't as interested in reading it, or is everyone reading it and just not voting and commenting as much???

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Re: Question of curiosity.

Thats where i usually start when reading advice, probably cos one or two of mine are in there! Once I have had a look in there, I will then go to most recent.

I didn't even know about the "needing votes" list! I will have to have a look when I have some more time - thanks!

Re: Question of curiosity.

Can't say I have read any advice lately, but when I do, I really don't have a set way of doing it, I either click on something I see of interest in activity list and if I do go into the advice section I do often click on needing votes....

Oh, I didnt know about the "needing votes" thing! I'll look from now on. How do I access advice? Mostly by keeping an eye on the Minti home page on new advice, on the activity list, on my watch list, and occasionally by searching for stuff. Maybe the Home page needs an "advice of the Day" randomly selecting a few articles or something? Im constantly amazed how much advice there is on Minti. There are several writers I always check when they write new stuff, even if it's on a subject Im not interested, and I was looking yesterday for an old article written by Nell for eg and thought it would be quickest to go backwards through her list of articles, and there were pages and pages of articles! I had no idea she'd written so much, and there must be others like that too! Perhaps on people's home pages there needs to be a random "article of the day" too for prolific writers like Nell?

Re: Question of curiosity.

Did you know you can go to the member's list, click on the column titles and have the list show up in order of the people that have written the most advice so you can see who the most prolific writers are? You can also do it with the other colums, where you can see who has the most kids, the most compliments, the most gifts, comments, votes, etc.

Re: Question of curiosity.

Did you know you can go to the members list and click on the top of the columns to put them in order of whatever the column is? for eg, date joined, most number of advice written, number of photos, comments, etc. And if you click on it a second time it reverses it so its least advice, comments, whatever. Thats a good way of finding who the prolific advice writers are, who's got the most photos, who signed up first and most recently, etc.

For curiosities sake I've had a look, these are the current stats:

most advice: pfallerj (313)

most comments: cazza (11881)

most photos: mcm (1970)

most friends: rachelcook (7327)

most gifts: electrifying02 (28)

most children:

oops, saved too soon, most children are 8 people in equal standing with 10 kids each.

Kellzacar has most compliments and most votes made, nell18-3 has most votes recieved.

Re: Question of curiosity.

Hey DA

To be honest, i didnt even know that the needing votes section was there! LOL

If i see something main minti page when i sign in or on the activity list i will check it out if i have time. But usually i will search for any advice that i need.

Sometimes i dont comment because i have nothing to add, or it will have nothing to do with me yet, like advice on teens...

I sometimes get stuck in my own little world too. I will check if have any mail, reply to that, then check out friends blogs and stuff if i havent really been around for a few days...

Re: Question of curiosity.

hey DA,

yeah, i mainly look at 'activity list' for new articles..
and on the home page list too :)

hmm, i think i may be reading less articles than usual..
i think it's just because i'm too busy reading people's blogs, group blogs, and commenting on people's photos :)

i don't think it's so much that people are doing dodgy advice or anything (lol), just that i've been doing other stuff on minti instead :)

good question tho..
this has been an interesting topic of late !

Re: Question of curiosity.

Hmm... this is a good question. I don't check advice every single time I'm on.  When I do go to read some I look at recent, of course, but then I do usually check needing votes if there's nothing new that interests me on recent. That doesn't mean I always read it all, though. And if I do read it, there are a lot where I don't feel strongly either way about it, so I don't vote or comment. If I do vote I am likely to comment.

Let's just say advice isn't the driving force for me when I come to Minti. When I want specific advice I will probably do a search for something pertinent. And it will probly have something to do with teenagers.

Re: Question of curiosity.

Hey Purple Princess, great question.  In the beginning, I read nearly every piece of advice that was written (new) and would then go into the advice section and go to the need votes section.  Nowadays, I tend to read advice from certain members or ones that I find particularly interesting.

I have found lately there are a couple of issues.  One is that there is a ton of advice being written so they move off the advice section quickly so they may get missed if members don't go to the advice section.  Another is that it seems at times that people are pumpling crap advice out there for what ever reason.  I get tired of reading it and it puts me off advice for a while.

Re: Question of curiosity.

Being a bit time poor atm I seem to neglect the advice section but I will usually see something on the activity list. When it's quiet, I might go to needing votes. I rarely check ppl's home page for it tho. I mostly always vote and comment.

Re: Question of curiosity.

I find advice..

1. Recent advice (the section on the minti.com homepage) - see if there's anything which interests me since last login.

2. Sometimes needing votes

3. Sometimes I'll just put in a really general search term and have a wander through. Like 'food', 'baby' or 'school'.

4. Sometimes I'll look at the time ordered advice (most recent) but go to like page 35 or something - look at things from months or years ago.

I don't normally go to people's pages and look at their advice in the first instance, but if I read a piece I like I will often go to the author's page and have a look around.

Re: Question of curiosity.

Sorry - by the time I've waded through my watchlist and had a look at Q&A, that's my time gone!  I do look when it is quiet, but certainly not all the time.  I shall make more effort!

Re: Question of curiosity.

HAHA!  I'm not saying anyone should make more effort, I'm just curious as to the general patterns of advice reading. The other things that go on around here can so easily distract me from doing thingsl ike reading advice that I don't do it anywhere near as often as I used to.

Re: Question of curiosity.

Great question !!!!

When I was on more I would check every day on the latest advice and read everything and generally if I vote then I comment too. Haven't actually read a lot of advice lately but will be catching up soon

Re: Question of curiosity.

OK If I need advice say on something that is effecting me in the right now like teenage drinking or something I type in and search, read vote and comment if it is helpful. Sometimes something will come up on recent activity while I am there. I will read vote and comment only if it interests me or I have the time. If it about babies sleep patterns etc I don't have a need for at the time I wont always even click on it. There is a lot on here. I search as in google on a need basis. Sometimes while visiting someones lounge if a title of one of there advices catches my eye near there lounge I have gone to it and checked it out.

Re: Question of curiosity.

When I'm on an advice reading spree, I attack those written by members on my friends list.  I pick a few members on each page, and then a few  of their advice articles.

I always comment when I vote too as we all like getting feedback.

Re: Question of curiosity.

I sometimes go to the needing votes section, mostly i go to recent advice and see whats new.  I don't go to advice everytime i log on but i don't think there are that many people participating here as there use to be....maybe that is why.  I notice that advice gets a lot of hits but not as many votes but perhaps that is because it is non-members.
