Nancy Wake (The White Mouse)

by llmunchkinComment Published at 19:3019:3014 comments14 comments1083 Visits1083 VisitsReport
Born in NZ in 1912, Nancy spent most of her childhood and early teenage years on Sydney's Lower North Shore.  Nancy was a rebel, and a beautiful one at that!  She ran away from home at 16 to become a nurse, then upon receiving money from her Aunt she embarked on a journey to England.  Later she became a freelance journalist in France, before marrying Henry Fiocca in 1930 and joining the French Resistance in 1940.

Nancy Wake - Paris 1932

Nancy is a true heroine... She was clever, resourceful, feisty, strong, smart and a simply amazing woman.  She suffered personal tragedy, and showed great physical strength and aptitude.  I admire her greatly, please check these links from The New Zealand Edge, and diggerhistory for more information about her.

Code-named the "White Mouse" by the Gestapo, Nancy Wake is one of the most decorated women of the Second World War. She received the George Medal, 1939–45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, British War Medal 1939–45, French Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, French Croix de Guerre with Star and two Palms, US Medal for Freedom with Palm and French Medaille de la Resistance for her courageous endeavours. Wakes' medals are on display in the Second World War gallery at the Australian War Memorial.

There have been movies made about her story, and books, I particularly enjoyed Australian journalist Peter Fitzsimons, Nancy Wake: A Biography of Our Greatest War Heroine, published by Harper Collins, 2001.  I read it at a time when I thought that the world was rather bleak; this helped to put things in perspective and motivate me.

She is a shining example of someone who took action to fight for what she believed in and put it all on the line; she sure makes the world a better place.

Isn't she just awesome, if you get a chance to read the book, I highly recommend it is quite empowering.

If you weren't so far away, I'd loan you that movie - hopefully I will get time to watch it on the weekend.

Cheers, Lui xox

I didn't know she was born in NZ!  I think the movie Cate Blanchett was in (can't recall the name) was about her...i could be wrong but it rings a bell somewhere in the recesses!!

Re: Nancy Wake (The White Mouse)
The movie with Cate Blanchette (which I keep meaning to watch), was Charlotte Grey

I think that they referenced a lot of information from Nancy Wake's experiences.  Here is some more information about the movie - it is based on a novel, and the women in the resistance, however I can't tell if she was a real person per say.

Here is a movie that starred Noni Hazelhurst in 1987 called Nancy Wake
There was also a documentary from the same year Nancy Wake Codename:  The White Mouse
Here's a piece from youtube as well Nancy Wake "White Mouse" - isn't that great, but interesting non the less.

I will have to check that Angie - I know I originally heard of her when I was a teenager... She is one of the most decorated women from the war...

Mostly it was Vietnam Vet's who had problems getting recognised for their efforts on behalf of their countries.

Re: Nancy Wake (The White Mouse)
I can't remember if this is the person who they were talking about on the news a few years ago - but is it true the ANZAC's or Australians didn't recognise her til just a few years ago?

Re: Nancy Wake (The White Mouse)
Found it - yes, you are right, until April 2006 Nancy's efforts weren't 'officially' recognised by the NZRSA - even though she still holds a NZ passport.

On 22 February 2004 Nancy Wake was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in recognition of her "significant contribution and commitment" during the war. She now lives in the Royal Star and Garter Home for ex-servicemen in Richmond, West London, helped by a carer paid for by the Australian government.

Aha!

Ok, so that news segment thing was on her. I actually remember her saying that she was upset or couldn't be bothered about the NZ/AUS govt's for not recognising her til much later....
