Re: Slow Cooker

We always do roasts in our slow cooker, but today we are doing a stew.  We got a hotpot packet from the supermarket and bascially followed the recipe.

Just add what ever comes to mind, a bit like what ngairi does, loads of veges, water and rice, meat etc..

Re: Slow Cooker

do you know that slow cookers can cook other things than stews.............

all i do with my stews is chuck frozen diced meat in (thorded is fine as well, just i buy mine in a week pack and freze it all. 2 onions, 5 garlic cloves both finely diced. salt and pepper. veg, potatoe or rice. herbs. depending on what i am making depends if i use the dyed shitaki mushrooms, fish sauce, soy suace, seseme oil, oyster sauce, rice wine spirt (from aiain deli)  i cook that on low for 7hours.

i cook nice curries with the chuck steak. i also cook silverside with NO water on low for 4 hours, check after 3. there are recipies to cook cakes as well. yum. I love my slow cooker.

Re: Slow Cooker

I have been going to buy one to leave on during the day so that when you get home it is cooked seen as I am working full time but don't know if this is dangerous. Anyone else do this? I work 8am til 5pm. Is this too long to leave unattended? My son can turn it off earlier just wondering if others do this?

Re: Slow Cooker

I think that is the point of them, to leave them all day on very low heat, only 100 watts.   Really don't know how dangerous it could be and not sure where you would find out (manufacturer?)...i guess as dangerous as anything that is left on standby, like a tv for example...there is always that chance but they are designed to simmer at a low heat and for the food not to burn and catch fire, unlike a stove or oven.

A friend of mine does exactly this, puts it on when shes at work for the evening.  They also have a keep warm option too so your son could turn it on to that when he gets home.  I have mine on all day and go in and out and it seems fine, the bench does get a bit hot but if your were worried you could get a heat proof mat maybe.

Re: Slow Cooker

Thanks. I really should take the plunge and get one as I hate cooking dinner when I get home. It seems to take forever while we are all so hungry already. Will talk to them at the shop. Sounds good!

Re: Slow Cooker

I don't use recipes, but you just cube your meat & lightly flour it, fry it a little to brown slightly then throw everything in the slow cooker with some stock (and I love rice in my stews), pepper, salt (if you need it), garlic, onion, etc. If you need to thicken anymore use a bit of cornflour & also a little soy sauce gives a nice flavour.

Re: Slow Cooker

I use it to make the McCormicks curry that DomesticWarrior mentioned (They are found in Woolworths, usually on the bottom shelf) and I also make satay in mine using chicken drumsticks and they end up so tender the meat is delicious and just falling off the bone! We also add potato and sweet potato to the sataty, yummo!

Re: Slow Cooker

Great idea for winter. I was thinking of getting one for the painful times i have to cook.Thankfully not often. Chuck it all in and forget it. Just perfect for me!

Re: Slow Cooker

I just throw meat and vegies in, bit of stock and let it go. If it needs thickening I add rice. I don't usually use recipes

Re: Slow Cooker

Hi

I have one and the acutal slow cooker itself came with a book that had some recipes in it.  Do you have that?

You can also buy some satchets from the supermarket that make slow cooker meals.  I think they are McCormicks brand but there is only a few of them - a curry, a beef or lamb one (which i found peppery) and sorry, can't remember the other one.  The curry was ok.....not like a real curry but for something to shove on in the morning and have ready by dinnertime not bad.

I looked up on the internet slow cooker recipes and there were loads....if you need a link let me know.
