Oh Rats!

by ArnaComment Published at 03:5903:597 comments7 comments51 Visits51 VisitsReport

You have been plagued by rats, not that there is a great food supply in your house for them.  Slowly, using traps, you are winning the battle.  Until....

The one rat you are really after, because she has been breeding very quickly, springs the trap.  You go and check just to make sure she hasn't sprung and run.  Carefully, you get down and take a look.  There is the trap sprung, without the rat in it.  You start thinking that she has gotten away, then you see her.

She is laying a little way of, stunned and breathing funny.  She has been hurt, but not killed.  You know that you have to do something, and using rubbish bags as gloves, take the rapidly recovering creature outside, where she starts running in circles.  You watch her struggling to walk and breath and it breaks your heart...

Where do you go from here?  What is your next move?  Is it cruel to just leave her?

Re: Oh Rats!

I would have to get the hubby to deal with it... Can't leave the poor annoying animal like that... While I would not take it to the vet, I would have to put it out of it's misery...

Re: Oh Rats!

I would love to have a cat, but there are a few probs for us.

1.  We are renting and are not allowed cats or dogs or any furry animal! lol.

2.  We had to surrender our cats to the animal welfare league a few years ago.  See full story here  Because of that, I'm still having trouble come round to the idea of one day owning a cat ever again.

Re: Oh Rats!

Yep I would kill her, mind you I would not have released her, I would have pulled her neck as soon as I picked her up. I dont do rats as companions, LOL. So no dilema here. Its the peasant in me. LOL. I also hate to see any animal suffer, so no hesitation in putting them out of their misery. If she is comfortable then she would return, and the dilema would be back, so get it over with quick in my book. So yes, I think it is cruel to prolong the inevitable.

Re: Oh Rats!

I had to let her go!  She would have bitten me! lol.  Now, I don't mind rats, used to have one as a pet, but their teeth are a problem! lol.

We took her outside, she found somewhere nice and warm and as far as I know, she is running around again, maybe with a limp, but still on the go.  At least I haven't seen or heard her inside.  Don't think she is game to try the stairs!

Re: Oh Rats!

This is a tough one and in the first place I wouldn't be touching her, I would scream and get my partner LOL, but if I really really had to I would.  Yes it is cruel to just leave her and as you have already killed the others  it only seams fitting to put her out of her misery.  How??  Hmmm get a spade and dong her on the head or take a leaf out of DA's book and get the vacuum cleaner??  LOL

Re: Oh Rats!

Sadly, she recovered, but Les did a very big move around in the kitchen and there is no where for her to hide.  I think the 'creature under the stair' is also keeping her away! lol.

As for the vacuum, um, rat not mouse!  she is huge and our vacuum wouldn't cope! lol.  If she were a mouse, I would go down that road! lol.
