oh my 1982

by anniebabeComment Published at 03:1303:1313 comments13 comments43 Visits43 VisitsReport

does anyone remember when we were allowed to run on the footy oval after the siren run up to the players and congratulate them or hang around and kick the footy.

im talking about the mcg afl park just to name a few.

we saw an old game being replayed on tv yesterday before the delayed coverage of essendon and carlton (melbourne viewers) back in 1982 when tim watson was playing. the style of footy was totally different even the way the players ran.

the ground was muddier (my son says because in those days there was no drainage built onto the turf  ) also places like telstra dome the roof  gets covered so no more wet grounds.

my goodness it even brought back memories to my son (he will be 28 on friday) so even though he was only 2 in 1982 he remembers in 1985 on how they were allowed on the ground after the siren!

gee if my son is at the stage where he is seeing flashbacks my goodness what can i say at 51!!!

i remember going to the footy in the 70s before i was married and the cheer squad were allowed to bring in the streamers on sticks with the two colours of their teams.

my some of these streamers were huge and the fan would frantically be waving them about when their team scored. i even remember streamers catching on fire at south melbourne carlton game at  what is now the "bob jane stadium

and for those that dont know south melbourne then moved to sydney to become the sydney swans the first team to move interstate outside of victoria.

for those also who dont know those days there were only 12 teams with the top 4 going into finals all the teams played each other evenly twice one on the home game then away game and all played on a saturday afternoon with games starting at 2.10pm

that game on sunday on telly brought back such great memories.................

cheers  annie

Re: oh my 1982

Yeah I would have been 12 then.   I am not footy fan and never have been but I remember they used to run on the ground, after the match and swamp the footy player.  Used to do that with the cricket players as well.

Re: oh my 1982

I remember when the WAFL was a big thing. You can still go onto the field of WAFL games but the crowds are not too much now but I take my kids sometimes. The little ones kick the footy around with dad at half time. I never lived in Perth back then but I'm not even sure if we had it over here yet. I was probably starting high school then. Some dads would watch the VFL. My parents are now big west coast eagle fans the same with my brothers and son so have only recently in the last few years gone to see the footy at Subiaco. The atmosphere is good but I bet it was great when you could run out but I can see why they stopped it. Would have been getting dangerous.

Re: oh my 1982

HAHA dont remember 1982, well thats cause i was born that year. LOL But I do remember going on the oval after a WAFL game (Weastern Australia footie leauge) I went to all the Swan Districs home games from 1982-1989. then my pop got too sick to go.

I used to have a west coast eagals footie with Jason Ball's autograph and troy Ugal (sp) and I was at Adam Hunters first WAFL game before he signed up with the eagles.

I dont go anymore or watch. become to violent for me.

Re: oh my 1982

yeah i used to love going to but too many changes, they closed afl park (that was only 10 minutes away by car)

they closed windy hill (essendons old ground) and they closed princes park (old carlton ground later also known as optus oval)

then the afl wonder why families dont go anymore. too commercial too many changes

thats so great that pop would take you to the games though sad that he could no longer go due to ill health that would have been very tough for him

at least he gave you the memories thats so important in life

cheers annie

Re: oh my 1982

I wasn't a footy fan as a kid and I'm still not, but yes, I remember what it was like. I remember the several foot high piles of streamers on the footy fields after everyone left, the swarm of hundreds of people onto the field at the end of each game, carrying ALL the players on their shoulders, and the mud and rain soaked players that looked more like mud men than athletes. If you think that's a blast from the past, can you remember the marking maneouver that was banned where one player would literally fly 15 feet into the air by running up the back and launching themselves off the shoulder of another player? The "Up there Cazalie" trick (not sure of the spelling) was quite spectacular to see when done right. Pity so many players got hurt doing it though or we'd still see it done today. LOL
