Recycling Plastic Bags

by Domestic-warriorComment Published at 19:4119:417 comments7 comments25 Visits25 VisitsReport

We all have hundreds of plastic bags choking up our cupboards and pantries.  I have noticed that the major supermarkets have a recycling bin to put in your plastic shopping bags for recycling.

This is in Australia anyway, i'm not sure about other countries (maybe others could let us know if they do it in their area) but this is a great idea instead of throwing them into landfill when having a clear out.

Re: Recycling Plastic Bags

Good idea!  We re-use ours as garbage bags and I take any left over to local shops for them to re-use.  But it would be even better to eliminate them I know....

I also reuse them in this way, it's good to try and get two, three or more uses out of them.

Although after this 3.76 billion (according to Clean up Australia) of them still end up in land fill and estimates on how long a bag takes to break down is anywhere from 20 -400 years.  Shocking!

That's great, I must keep an eye out for it, and if I don't see it, I will ask management.  What do they do with the bags though?

Here is a link you might find interesting, it house information about Australia's Plastic Bag Reductioni Strategy.

Re: Recycling Plastic Bags

I'm assuming they are recycled in some way but even small contaminants, such as dockets etc, can render them useless.  I figure it is worth a shot though.  This is an interesting article about our humble plastic bag

I noticed recently that LA has banned them now.  Drastic measures need drastic actions and i really think people would soon get use to taking their reusable bags shopping.  Plastic bags are so convenient, even though most people are concerned about their effects, complacency takes over.

Oooh I feel so guilty for the times I forget to bring our greenie bags to the store... Next time, I will just have to buy more.
