My name is Jessica, but you can call me Jess

Here are a few things about me.

I am 31 year old Australian, married to a French Canadian, and living close to Montreal, in Canada.

I am currently a stay at home mum with my 14 month old son, that is soon to change. Not the son the stay at home bit.

I have a 10 year old step daughter who only speaks french, so I have also had to learn a new language.

I came to Canada for a vacation and never left, its a classic tale of Backpacker meets french man and marries.

Before I became a mother i was a cook, mostly breakfasts.

Here are a few things about my family.

My husband is a General Contractor, builds and sells land and house packages.

My step daughter is starting grade five this year and is slowly learning english. I am so sure she knows more then she lets on because when I speak to her father she can jump in on a conversation just at the right place. So I now have to watch what I say. :)

Our son is 14 months old, running around, mouth full of teeth and starting to speak. Although sometimes sometimes to my english ears I think they are just noises then I realise he is speaking French. I speak mostly english with him and his father speaks mostly french, so with any luck he should be fully biligual. That is the plan anyway.

Well that is it from me at the moment. Pleased to meet you all.....

Welcome Jess
And how great learning another language and getting both kids speaking both. What a great start for them.  What is it you are going to do, now that you are planning not to stay at home? Oh, and when you have spare time, why not pop in and join the Travelling with Children group and help us with the french for things like nappy / diaper, formula, breast feeding and other terms and phrases!

Welcome Jess

Thank you... I will be checking out your group I just have to answer to every one first... :) I am looking forward to a trip to Australia in December.... I am not looking forward to the long flight of 30 hours or so depending on the direction we take with Francis on my lap... It will be interesting. I'll be checking out your group there for a few pointers and I am sure when I get back from Australia I'll have a few of my own...

Thanks...

Hi Jess!
Great to have you here at minti.  Love the story about how you came to Canada and never left.  Sounds like a romance novel :)  Glad to have you here.

Hi Jess!
Thank you.. Romance yes, it was very fast and, wonderful and down right scary as well...  But I would not change a thing...  thanks for the welcome.. (Scary because I had to give up a lot of things for love.. But you know I never understood the words "When you know, You know" Until I met my husband and people asked me how could I marry someone only after 8 months of knowing him...  When you know, you know....

Hi Jess,
Nice to meet you....I'm from Ontario.  Pretty cool how the little ones will pick up both languages if they hear it enough. Welcome to Minti

Thank you

It is funny at times listening to him, I have to make sure that if I speak to him in french that I am saying it correctly because I don't want him to get it wrong.  He says milk and water in French and sometimes all I hear are sounds, but I know he is speaking French. When he wants his milk he will say it in french and stand by the microwave. When he wants water he will say water and point to the fridge. It is rather cute. But I am trying to get him to say those words in english to as we are going to Australia soon, I am not sure if it would be easier just to teach those words to my folks so they will know what he is saying....

Thanks you

Hello Jess, and welcome to minti. It's nice to meet you. How do you like living in Quebec? I'm from Alberta!

thanks for the welcome
Living in Quebec is great, I have wonderful family, new language. Although I must say I do complain about the witner a bit to much. It does get rather cold in these parts. But after seven years I have finally found a snow suit to keep me warm. I can now go out for more then 1/2 hour at -15... This year I am going to try for -17

Your son is getting the best of both worlds.

With your husband speaking to him in his first language (French) and you speaking in your first language(English) your child is getting the best language exposure you can give him.  He is a very lucky boy. Our ability to pick up other languages reduces as we get older so the younger the exposure to multiple languages the better.
Unfortunately my husband and I only speak english so we can only offer our child one language.

Thankyou, and yes he is. His cousin who lives next door actually told me one day how lucky Francis was to be able to learn both languages. When I said that if he wants to learn english I told him I'd be more then happy to help him (he has just started lessons at school). He got a little bit shy but after I told him a few funny translations (OF course they were nice translations) we played a little english to french game.  I am hoping that my step daughter will pick it up.. She too knows more then she lets on so I now have to watch what I say, no more can I talk about her christmas presents while she is there. :)

thanks and yes the challange is there, I have to make sure I get a word right before I use it with him. My biggest problem is masculin and feminen words... I can't even spell.... But he is picking up the french rather well....   It will get harder for me I think when he starts school and knows more then I do. :)

Hi Jess!  I don't think you'll have a problem with your child being bilingual at all since your step daughter and husband speaks French (all the time?).

Welcome to minti!

Hi Izzy,

My only issue with teaching them both languages is that I get it right.... It has made me pick up my mistakes a lot more which is great.. But sometimes I get frustrated trying to say things if French that don't sound right and automatically switch to English. I don't want to confuse the kids, but sometimes it is so hard not to... Thankfully my step daughter gets a laugh out of it and understands.....  My son he just has no idea... YET....

Hi Jess! Welcome to Minti. It is great to teach your child(ren) bilingual language, specially from young age. I'm a bit slack, but I'll start soon too.

thank you.... It is not an easy job.. But now is the time to start.. I understand that I can be slack with it too which is why I am so happy that I have my step daughter and husband to help keep up both languages....
