WONKY PRODUCE WATCH

Not long ago I purchased two oranges for my little one, gleefully cut one up and handed him a slice.   Few seconds had passed and he threw it down, so picking up another slice  placed it near his mouth only for him to turn away and screw up his face! Curious I placed the orange slice in my mouth and spat it out promptly! It was terrible and tasted more like stale alcohol then anything.  Upset to say the least the next day returning the oranges and got back a full refund of $2.73  asking them to pass on to management that ‘there should be stricter controls for quality as we feed our children with the produce they sell’.

Frankly I’m sick of it! The produce quality at the bigger stores is often not up to scratch no matter what their advertising dollars say it’s poor at the best of times. I’m just so sick of having to throw produce out like the following;

*Fruit that does not taste like it should

*Vegetables that go off only after a few days in the fridge

*Bruised fish

*Using the slogan ‘fresh’ when things clearly are not, example –often used on fruit even after cold storage!

But no more! I’m taking it back and requesting a refund….and not only that I’m writing about it here for all to see.  Please join me in keeping a running log of WONKY PRODUCE WATCH and maybe, just maybe if the big companies are brave enough they could come aboard and shed some light on the topic.

Fielders Sandwich Slice Bread?????

by janicepoveyComment Published at 00:0100:014 comments4 comments40 Visits40 VisitsReport

I have bought Fielders Sandwich Sliced bread for years....but have noticed in the past  6 months, it hasn't been the same.

Other than the price going up  from $ 1. 79  by 60 cents a loaf to  $ 2.29....the consistency is not the same...the slices are much thinner & now i'm finding the slices falling apart in my hand.....to add to this it doen't stay as fresh as it use to.

Just wondering of anyone else has found the same problem????????????

Cheers Janice

P.S. Just feel we are getting rippped of all around, to so many products these days!!!!!!!!!!

Reduced items - check the date!

by kseersComment Published at 19:3419:343 comments3 comments31 Visits31 VisitsReport

ON Monday I found myself in town unprepared (had to rush in to have an x-ray), so I popped in to the supermarket to buy a few extras.  For lunch I picked up a lovely salmon mousse, marked down, which I used as a spread on plain bread.  Normally I check the date on things that are marked down to check that we will have time to eat them before they expire - somethings (like milk, yoghurt, fruit) go so quickly in our house it is not an issue.  Didn't check this item as I ate it straight away.  Big mistake!  I felt sick that night, so checked the packaging - on the day it was sold it was already 2 days out of date!  On a fish product!  EEEUUUW!  Can they do that??

$1.00 $1.00 $1.00 - is it a bargain???

by pavementcracks70Comment Published at 18:0918:092 comments2 comments28 Visits28 VisitsReport

Well I'll be the first to put my hand up and say yes ive been guilty of buying those reduced gourmet lettuce packs from woolies/coles.  How could you not? theyre a $1.00 and anything a dollar these days is a bargain, right? Well after putting some thought into this practice of mine finally come to  the understanding those big stores are still ripping us off.  At full price $3.99 for a 150 grams of sealed lettuce works out to be around $26.00 (what a rip off!) and even at $1.00 price it works out to about  $7.00 per kilo.  SEVEN BUCKS a kilo and we think were getting a bargain lol.....might be quick and easy but so is cutting up lettuce!!

The state of things

by Domestic-warriorComment Published at 05:4305:431 comments1 comments31 Visits31 VisitsReport

There has been alot on TV recently about the state of our fruit and vege produce from supermarkets.  In my experience i have found that nothing lasts from the supermarket and is often rotten.

I saw recently that Strawberries were kept for 3 weeks in storage....how do they store them that long? And no wonder the go moudly after a day or so from purchase.

I buy my fruit and veges every week from an Organic market in Brisbane...Northey Street for those of you that are in the area.  When i do top up from the supermarket i'm usually dissappointed.  I used to have my organics home delivered but once i stopped working found it cheaper to go and get it myself.  Really the prices i pay aren't that much different to the supermarkets, and i know it's better for us as a family.

Price of Rice

by 2BeautifulGirlsComment Published at 03:4503:451 comments1 comments23 Visits23 VisitsReport

I heard on the news tonight that the price of rice is set to double because of the drought.  Instead of producing 1.2 million tonnes, Australian farmers have only produced 18 thousand tonnes this year.   The fact that it has now been made public, this will give the big supermarket chains to charge as much as they want.

I am really picky about my fruit and veg.  I really prefer a to get mine at a good green grocer.  I live near Freo and there is a great shop that has lots of organics and quite a few other groceries.  It is called Peaches.

I think it would be great to include good fruit and veg shops in your area...if you like to share...

Our tests show supermarket apples are up to 10 months old

January 20, 2008

Despite the advertising that pushes fresh fruit and vegetables, independent testing shows apples have been stored for months before sale, Maxine Frith reports.

Latest related coverage

APPLES on sale in supermarkets are up to 10 months old, an investigation by The Sun-Herald has revealed.

Woolworths, which advertises itself as "the fresh food people", was the worst culprit, with the oldest products on sale.

The Sun-Herald bought samples of Granny Smiths from Woolworths, Coles and the Norton Street Grocer in Bondi Junction after learning that, within the industry, some products are nicknamed "birthday apples" because they are up to a year old by the time they hit the shelves.

All the samples were Australian-grown.

The apples are kept in cold storage under controlled conditions from the time they are picked.

But scientists said that quality and freshness was being affected because they were being kept for longer in order to satisfy consumer demand for year-round products.

Our apples were sent for testing at the independent Sydney Postharvest Laboratory, which conducts research for the fruit and vegetable industry.

Analysis showed the Woolworths samples were about 10 months old while the Norton Street and Coles products had spent 9 months in storage since being harvested.

The apples were also tested for firmness and levels of ethylene, a natural plant hormone that stimulates fruit to ripen but can also cause it to go off.

Stephen Morris, the principal research scientist who conducted the tests, said that Norton Street apples were of the best quality and Woolworths the worst.

Woolworths' apples had 75 times the ethylene levels of the fruit from Norton Street.

Dr Morris said: "Apples can be kept for six months and they will still be of very good quality.

"After nine months the quality is going to start to be affected and at 10 and 11 months you are not going to get such a good apple.

"If you want to eat fresh fruit now, don't buy apples, buy mangoes."

Dr Morris said that any apples on sale at the moment would be at least eight months old.

Woolworths chief executive Michael Luscombe said: "Apples have a very short growing and harvest season and it has always been the case that they are picked and kept in cold storage.

"The cold storage helps to slow the ripening process but of course it can't keep an apple as fresh as if it came straight off the tree so it will affect the quality.

"Customers want apples all year round. We have a big commitment to Australian farmers and 97 per cent of all our produce is from Australian producers.

"The only options other than cold storage would be to not have apples all year round or to buy from the northern hemisphere where the quality might not be as good.

"I accept that consumers might not be aware of the fact that the apples on sale are not fresh off the tree.

"It might be something that we need to do in terms of customer education, perhaps using our television adverts when we have staff members talking about what is in season to explain when they will have come from cold storage."

A spokesman for Coles said: "The technology for storing apples is now very sophisticated."
