Hoping someone can answer my questions...

by sealsista72Comment Published at 06:5406:546 comments6 comments44 Visits44 VisitsReport
Hello, Today I went to a breastfeeding clinic at the hospital and the appointment was really informative. I forgot to ask a few questions though, one being about dummies. Is it okay to give your baby a dummy whilst breastfeeding??? I know I did with Ethan, but I only fed him for three weeks. My second child, which I fed six months, wouldn't have a dummy or expressed milk at all. Any help would be appreciated. I really want it to work this time. Love Tanya xo.

Bub #1, both dummy and breastfed- spat breast when I sneezed at 4 weeks, dummy stayed until 2 years.

Bub #2 ditto for above, except spat breast at 4months due to being a rubber neck! lmao!

Bub#3 Same again, but lasted 3 months before giving up the breast.

Bub#4 No dummy due to her refusal to take it (more sleepless nights for me) and breastfeed for 5 months- gave up when #5 was on the way.  She does suck her thumb.

Bub#5 No dummy, still breastfeeding at 9months.  We didn't even offer the dummy with her, instead, I opted to feed her in my bed overnight, which is still what happens.  No having to get up to replug, which is a pain especially in winter!  Oh, she is an occassional thumb sucker.

Ultimately, it is your choice.  You have to go with what feels right for you, not what the so called professionals recommend because they aren't the ones who have to pace the hall at night.

Hey Arna,

Thanks so much for your reply - I found it incredibly interesting.  My last child was the one who had his dummy the longest and that was for eight months, but my second child wouldn't take it at all but successfully breastfed for six months so it's good to see how different babies can be.

They do say it is not recommended.  That said I used one with both of mine and they were both long term breastfeeders.  However I woudl wait until breastfeeding is well established before introducing it, to save "nipple confusion".

Thanks for your reply to my question. I think what I'm going to do is not bother with a dummy to start with and see how things go. Love Tanya xo.

Re: Hoping someone can answer my questions...

I have known a number of friends successfully b/f AND use dummies, so it must be possible. I cant remember when they introduced the dummy, possibly at the 6 weeks to avoid nipple confusion. Perhaps someone else knows for sure. DD2 didnt object to a dummy after that stage, but she always preferred me!

Re: Hoping someone can answer my questions...

Yeah, I have known a few people who have seemed to manage it, but I have a feeling that it was partly the reason for my failure to breastfeed Ethan successfully.  Yes, I did end up with mastitus, but I think it was because he failed to empty that breast fully so the milk ducts got blocked and in result he stopped feeding and then the mastitus developed.

Thanks for your reply,

Love Tanya xo.
