cracked/bleeding nipples

by IzzyComment Published at 13:4913:494 comments4 comments1318 Visits1318 VisitsReport

This seem to be a common problem for breastfeeding women. Luckily for me, I never experienced either one. I learned from a breastfeeding class that a good practice after each nursing is to express a little milk with your fingers and rub the milk on the entire nipple. Let air dry before puttting your bra back on. I did this and never experienced cracked nipples.

Please share your experience so that others can benefit.

cracked/bleeding nipples
I only experienced this after my first. Obviously more experienced with my next two.  I avoided soap on my nipples for a few weeks before my due date and once she was born I expressed a bit  to rub over the nipples but I still got cracked and bleeding nipples.  I ended up using a cream which worked for me and it wasn't until after it had almost cleared up that I found out that if you do experience cracked nipples to try a different way of nursing the baby such a lying down feeding them or the 'football hold'.  This way the baby's mouth is attached slightly off the sore (cracked) area of the nipple giving it a chance to heal quicker without constant pressure or rubbing on the same area that happens during each feed.

Very good tip, Izzy. I did the same thing. Also avoid soaps on the nipple area.

I went to a prenatal class and they talked about b-feeding and even had a b-feeding mom come in with baby but never stressed proper latching technique or nipple care.  I only learned about the "rubbing expressed milk" on my nipple after it was too late but it still worked better than any of the creams I bought that's for sure...one of them made it worse because I was allergic to it...like I really needed that on my bleeding/cracked nipple....ha now that was fun

Wow, I would think that proper latching would be the #1 priority in breastfeeding classes.
