Have you seen this rubbish?

by MummaBearComment Published at 05:3505:3511 comments11 comments124 Visits124 VisitsReport

This is saying that breastfeeding IS NOT best and cause INCREASE allergies but there are no links to back up the research that was supposedly done.  Just wondering if anyone knew anything about it.  I feel it's going to set breastfeeding education back 100 years, which is a worry since there's so much judgement passed on a mother who breastfeeds past 6 months as it is.  I am proud to say that my child breastfed until she self-weaned at 2.5 years and I wouldn't have it any other way, I know she had only the best.

What annoys me more
what annoys me the most about this is that they tested families with KNOWN allergies! Of course if asthma/excema/allergies is in the family the child is likely to have it regardless of how the mother feeds the child as a baby.  If we have a nut allergy in the family, it makes no difference if the child starts solids at 3 months, 6 months or 12 months, or if the child is bottle fed or breastfed, chances are the baby with grow to have that allergy by the age of 5 anyway.  There are no links to any research that was done, but it did make the 5pm news and the late news so lots of people would have seen it.  Oh grrr!

Where's the evidence?

No wonder new mums today are so confused! I wonder where the evidence is and who is behind the research? Sometimes research can be funded by formula companies to get the results they are after - so I am a little bit sceptical.

I think there is no doubt that breastfeeding is the most natural way to go and has lots of other benefits such as creating a unique bond with your baby.

Breastfeeding and allergies
This makes me feel so irate.
My big boy has suffered from severe eczema from 12 months. I had someone say to me its cos he was feeding (he weaned at 18mths). Makes me upset as if I caused it as if my milk was bad. I can't say formula would have made it worse but I can't say it would have healed it better.
He suffers from asthma and allergies and I do not link it to breastfeeding at all. (Immunisation actually)
I am feeding bub now at 18 months and I will continue as long he wants it. He has had mild eczema on his legs since he was a young baby- I cannot relate that to feeding. My big girl never had health problems and she fed til almost 12 months.

Hogwash

Breastfeeding increases allergies? I think that's just hogwash.. how can something like that increase allergies? For 9 months, the fetus lives in his/her mom's body, and when the baby is born he/she is fed out of that same body. Same make up, same fluid, same everything....  if the baby isn't allergic to mom's baby while in the womb (who has ever heard of a baby being allergic to mommy?) than how can baby be allergic to her milk?  But of course, this barring mom eating weird things that causes allergies..but for the the most part it shouldn't cause anymore allergies than a normal situation would call for.

breastfeeding is DEFFINATELY the best
there is no doubt in my mind that it is the best, there are like 10 million reasons to say so, who ever wrote that rubish is bonkers, totally bonkers, and in demial, as we all know that it is the best food ever for babys, and no matter what you do to cows milk it cannot form the live antibodies there are in human breast milk, my bub is 6 months old and i intend to continue breastfeeding her until she is atleast 1 years old, i'm going to try keep going till she is 2 years old even as the benifits are great

breastfeeding is DEFFINATELY the best
Unfortunately this made news headlines at 5pm and again in the late news so many, many people have heard it already and because people are swayed so easily my main fear is that we will now have a new generation of first-time mums giving bubs solids at 3 months.  I had mine on solids early but since she was opening her mouth and leaning towards whatever I was eating (and breastfeeding hourly) I decided to try her on it.  But all she had was rice cereal made to a runny consistency using breastmilk and I don't think it was bad for her.  It didn't make her cut out feeds.

Bizarre!
I emailed it to our ABA group leader to see what she says but I find it a bit hard to believe myself!  What do you think?

ABA is Australian Breastfeeding Association.  It used to be called Nursing Mothers Association of Australia but they have them in a lot of countries.

Bizarre!
I think it's potentially harmful for new mums and their babies to be told that starting solids at 3 months can decrease the chance of allergies when 40 years of research from the world health organisation says to not introduce solids til at least 6 months.  THey can back it up with evidence too, this article is not backed up in any way with any facts and I don't believe enough people were tested over a long enough period of time for them to be able to safely go public with it.  Many people are easily swayed by this kind of thing and starting solids at 3 months can be deadly.

Bizarre!
through all the research i have done  recently i have come to the conclution to not bother giveing my bub solids till she truly needs them, she is 6 months old,t i have seen proof of other breastefeeding parents that have not given solids yet and there bubs are nine months old and they are healthy bubs for it
