breastfeeding my twins

by IzzyComment Published at 13:1413:1411 comments11 comments104 Visits104 VisitsReport

My twins are on the same schedule. I breastfeed them both at the same time (football hold) and it's been working out. But lately, I've been feeling like one of my breast isn't emptying completely. There is a hard spot. I try to breastfeed longer on it, and switch the girls, but it isn't going away. I pump and hand express, but it comes back.

Any suggestion on alleviating the blocked duct? I don't want to suffer from mastitis so I am careful to massage that area and makes sure to express by hand to get the milk out - but if anyone has an easier way... any suggestions are welcome.

Re: breastfeeding my twins

Well Done on feeding twins - what a great effort. I had blocked ducts too and found a warm/hot shower and massage really helped. The cold compress after feeding helped to.

Keep up the good work!

Re: breastfeeding my twins

Wow, thanks all! I feel like I'm just doing what I'm supposed to be doing and nothing special. But I guess there's no harm in giving myself a pat on the back.

One of the girls wake up a bit earlier than the other, but so far they're still on the same schedule though. Hopefully they keep at it.

WELL DONE!!!
OK blocked duct (which is probably what it is)
-massage towards nipple while feeding
-warm compress before and during feed
-cold compress after
-cabbage leaves
-position feeding. If you are only ever feeding football style you could get blocked duct on opposite side of your breast. Babies remove most milk from chin side so you may need to try feeding babies in a different position (maybe cross them over in front of you??) or lay them down and get on your hands and knees over the top of them (seriously) and make sure chin is over blocked area. Sounds funny but it works.
-Ring ABA breastfeeding counsellor for these and other suggestions before it gets worse. Being tired and worn out from one baby can lead to mastitis developing overnight so you definately don't want it with twins.
BIG HUGS AND CONGRAT TO YOU AGAIN- WONDERWOMAN!!!!!

Re: breastfeeding my twins

wonderwoman? You're too kind!

By the way, that's an extensive list...so thank you very much. What you said about feeding using only one position made me recall my breastfeeding class. They did say the same thing you just said... where the baby's chin points get emptied. So the hardness on one of my breast makes sense, it's on the top.

I've done the massage... which makes me feel like a cow by the way, the way I'm man-handling my breast. LOL. I haven't tried the warm and cold compress though.

Hey Izzy
Congratulations again on your beautiful girls. Well done on breastfeeding two at once.
I am currently feeding a little baby girl with a very runny nose.

It's quite funny actually. My mom was surprised that 2 could be breastfed at once.

Re: breastfeeding my twins
well first of all i would like to congratulate you on breastfeeding both your twins, that is just so awsume. you should be so very proud of yourself. i don't think there are too many mums who would breastfeed there twins, so you need to pat yourself on the back cause you deserve it you really do. but as  haveing any advice about the hard spot i just don't know. i have never had any mastitus problems or threats but perhaps just make sure when the bubs are next hungry put them on the boob that has the hard spot and let them suck it dry till its gone, but you've probably already tryed that.

Thanks samantha. I never had this problem with my son either, so it's all quite new.

Re: breastfeeding my twins
I agree with mummy2girls, I found that a warm shower and massaging the area helped a lot.  Expressing gets milk from the breast, as done feeding, but a massage focuses on just that spot.  I also agree with mummy2girls about the twins being adorable!

Thanks mummabear!

I have been massaging, which works. I just hope I don't have to do it ALL the time.
