Childcare centres and breastfeeding

A friend of mine was really upset.  She had chosen her childcare centre well but forgot to ask one vital question - How do you heat the bottles? There are signs on the doors of the nursery, toddler room, and prekindy room saying Breastfeeding Welcome Here yet they don't really cater for it.  They do have a lounge chair for mums to breastfeed comfortably.  But when it comes to heating bottles they only have a microwave.  They said that when ABC changed their policy on how milk was heated, they allowed microwave heating and took the bottle warmers out.  Breastmilk can't be heated in the microwave which means that her baby is having milk cold! She didn't know until today and the baby started on Monday.  She's still not sure if they really are giving it to her cold or if they just said that when they realised that breastmilk wasn't able to be heated in a microwave.  My concern is that childcare centres are not even fully catering to the breastfed baby!  They think they are but there really is not enough information out there on breastfeeding for childcare staff, doctors, or mothers.  It's there but it's not as accessible as information on different formulas and how to mix it and how to heat it.  Sorry, just needed a vent.  This friend of mine said she suggested to the staff they could put boiling water into a heat proof bowl and sit the bottle in that or run it under tap water for a while, it only has to be room temperature, and they said they could do that.  But how slack is that honestly that they have to heat milk in a microwave now when we all know that's not a good thing even if it is convenient.  We all know the dangers of heating milk in a microwave.

Re: Childcare centres and breastfeeding
Can your friend download a copy of the caregivers guide to the breastfed baby off the ABA website? She can print it off and give it to the Daycare and it explains everything. I've heard of this happening in lots of daycares. It seems that the more FF is becoming a norm for parents the more it's assumed by people that everyone FF and BF isn't catered for. I've recently heard of a mum who couldn't put her child in daycare because they wouldn't take a BF baby on the grounds that they can't be comforted without a boob.
Bub can have the BM cold but many don't like it and it's better to warm it up anyway.

Re: Childcare centres and breastfeeding
The first time DD was left was with a family member when she was about 4 months old.  The little boy in the house was sitting with her and she started crying when his mum went to the loo.  He got it out and gave it to her from the fridge.  She drank it cold, even held it herself, and she'd never had milk from any source other than the breast before so we were all impressed lol.  It was breast milk still she was given.  After that it was just given to her cold from a cup.  She wouldn't drink it even at room temp which is weird because she got it at room temp when she got it straight from the source.  I've looked after bf babies heaps, even when they haven't been left with expressed milk to feed them they can still be held in the same way and communicated with in the same way even if you're not the one with the right boobs to feed them! How rediculous is that.  As if you use only feeds to comfort a baby! If that was the case, there would be far more obese kids from being a bottle every time they made a sound to indicate they were upset.  Bottles aren't used to comfort every time, neither are breasts.

What an incredibly stupid thing!  I wouldn't have thought to ask either.  You would assume they know what they are doing.... mmm

They are trained professionals, experts in child caring. Not good.

Re: Childcare centres and breastfeeding

I have always pre made my bottles 48 hours in advance. Wiether it is expressed milk or formula. I freeze them then after 24 hours i move them to the refrigerator. i sterilize the used bottles re make them and re freeze them. My frige is full of them. To re heat them as they are usually srill a bit frozen i will stand them in warm water for a moment to get them to room temperature. i wont use a microwave for any of my childrens meals or drinks as i have always veen told that they are dangerous. Apart from the fact that they can get so hot they also burn out all the nutrients from the formula. Srick to what you know and what you know does sound right.
