Mastitis

I got this while breastfeeding it hurts, my breast was very red and engorged and hard & painful. It was like my breast had hard lumpy balls in it. My doctor said this was from my milk ducts being blocked. The redness started inthe nipple area and slowley moved to the areola, top & middle of my breast area. Wearing a bra was so uncomfortable. The material made my breast feel like it was on fire. Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you combat it. My health nurse and doctor both told it maybe the start of an infection, they said to express out as much as i could to ease the pain and unblock the milk ducts also use frozen cabage leaves to cool the area, this helped relieve the pain but it really killed to express. But when the milk was less in my breast, i was so much more confortable. I also had a ulcesated nipple & areola as my bub wasnt suckeling properly. I bought a special nipple cream & nipple caps from my local pharmacy. This helped heaps. I was ready to ween bub off my breast milk, but we managed threw it & my maternal & child health nurse taught me how to attach bub to my breast properly so i wouldn't get any ulceration again. I quickly learned my lesson. And feeding was fine once it passed. Any otherinformation would be great. If not i can add some.

Re: Mastitis
hi! I had it twice with my first - at first I just massaged and had them under the hot water of the shower to release the blockage.  When they actually got infected i got quite sick and had to get antibiotics, but the dr told me the best thing for comfort is cabbage leaves - preferably cooled - worked a treat.  Aside from that, feed as often as possible to release it.  Hope that helps!

Re: Mastitis

With my first, I never experienced any blocked ducts.

With the twins, I had to pump exclusively for a week and a half because they were in the NICU. I had trouble with my pump and it wasn't emptying my breasts so I steadily got more and more full and started to hurt. I knew it could lead to mastitis and I wasn't about to add that to my list of problems while I was recoverying from my c-section and having lost a lot of blood, so I started massaging my breasts like I was kneeding dough. I didn't care if it hurt while I did it. Finally I figured out that I needed a different size breastshield for my Medela pump and the problem went away.

Then it happened a 2nd time, this time it was because I was breastfeeding the twins at the same time and only on a football hold. Not changing positions caused some areas of my breasts not to be emptied well. Again, I began massaging them like a crazy woman, determined not to experience mastitis.

Re: Mastitis
i  had it with nearly all my children and the best thing to do as flicka said was go to the dr. for some antibiotics....continue breast feeding because that actually helps to relieve the pain as hard as it is to believe and get as much rest as possible because it makes you feel really feverish if you dont go to the doctor straight away...it is usually caused by a blocked milk duct...and rest i cannot emphasise this enough as it does knock you around.

Re: Mastitis
I had it a couple of times.  Never had the desire to wean bub off the breast milk at any time before her second birthday.  I had to have antibiotics for it, but they prescribe the ones that are safe to have during breastfeeding.  So antibiotics, cold compress, giving baby shorter, more frequent feeds from that side.  Expressing was too painful, I couldn't do it, so I just let bub do it lol.  There's no need to give up breastfeeding when you get it.  It just means it becomes painful for a couple of days til it passes.  Not sure what sort of info you wanted, but that's what I have experienced with it.
