Petite women do not produce enough milk?

by IzzyComment Published at 12:1412:1413 comments13 comments530 Visits530 VisitsReport

I am watching TLC's Baby Story, where they follow a woman through the last parts of her pregnancy until birth. She is less then 5 feet tall (152 cm), and her baby is 9 lbs 1 oz (about 4 kg). She said that her doctor told her that seeing that her baby is so big and she's so small, she would probably not make enough milk and told her to supplement with formula right away.

I have never heard of such a thing. Anyone heard of this before?

People are so dumb and ignorant......and yeah I've heard that too. That'd be like saying, if a man has a little p*n*s, then he won't produce sperm to create a baby..where do some of these so-called "experts" get thier misguided information.

I have also heard that women with small breasts will have trouble producing enough milk compared to large breasted women...what a load...

Her doctor has a big imagination and an inability to read medical literature.

This sort of crap is the reason that I have tried to put information about breastfeeding in my blog on Minti. But then I got slammed for that because it was seen as "making mothers who formula feed feel guilty". How do we get the information out to those who need it when they need it without being accused of 'making' mothers who were often given the wrong information in the first place angry at us instead of those who really betrayed them?

I think you're very passionate about the subject and it shows. I'm with you about educating people. I'm all for choice because breastfeeding is absolutely hard....but I wish that for those who chose to stop or not breastfeed, that they are doing so with correct and accurate information.

Re: Petite women do not produce enough milk?

I am with you all on this one. It was quite a shock when I heard a doctor would say such a thing.  I thought maybe there's something I didn't know.

I'm sure this is not an isolated incident. There are a lot of doctors who say such idiotic things to women in terms of breastfeeding. This goes to show you not to trust or be weary of an advice from a doctor that is talking about something outside his/her expertise.

Since this his in the U.S., the doctor that said it is probably an OB/GYN. They are experts when it comes to the woman's reproductive system, but not breastfeeding. Even pediatricians are really not experts on breastfeeding.

Re: Petite women do not produce enough milk?
As cassustin has already said "What a load of S**T!!!!"
I thought the first rule of medicine was to "do no harm"
this idiotic doctor as just condemned this child to
  • an increased risk of allergy
  • a higher risk of cot death
  • greater risk of several illnesses
  • greater risk of obesity and diabetes
  • increased risk of asthma
  • a 6 times higher risk of gastroenteritis
He has increased the mothers risk of
  • Post-partum haemorrhage
  • Pre-menopausal Breast Cancer: 2 times more likely
  •  Ovarian Cancer: 1.6 times more likely
  • Endometrial Cancer
  • The mother who has Gestational Diabetes is 2 times more at risk of developing type-2 Diabetes later on if she does not breastfeed
  •  Osteoporosis
He has also increased the financial and environmental cost of raising the child. Maybe he should read some real journals and put the formula company funded trash where it belongs!

Sorry but this makes me really mad! I know that some women can't breastfeed but there are a lot who could have breastfed had they not been given really bad advice from people who are paid to know better!

Re: Petite women do not produce enough milk?

What a load of  S**T!!! How would babies have survived before formula was made if this were true?? A womans body developes enough milk to feed her child, as the child grows and its needs change, so to does a mothers milk.

I cant believe that any doctor would say that. I have been told by every doctor, midwife, nurse and friends that unless there is a real medical reason for me to stop breastfeeding then i should continue for as long as i want to.

It makes me angry that this woman will never get to experience the joy of breastfeeding because of some rediculus comment that a doctor made!

I agree with you but as a point of interest, that's what a 'wet nurse' was for - when a mother couldn't or wouldn't feed their baby.

Re: Petite women do not produce enough milk?
You are not ignorant...afterall it was a long time ago they used them...even before my time i think!!  Aparently a non-lactating woman can produce milk by having a baby suckle at her breast!  Don't know how long that would take though to build up a supply....amazing when you think about it, how the human body works!!

I have never heard of this...I don't know why a doc would even say that, they should be encouraging mothers to nurse, not telling them that they are not big enough!  You make as much milk as your baby nurses/needs.  Unless he was concerned about her weight and maybe it harming her, there should be no reason why she could not nurse.

Re: Petite women do not produce enough milk?
grrrr - no - I always was told that your body would produce what your baby needed no matter the size.  I have seen tiny women produce enough milk to feed 3 children long term with no problems.  The only issue I have come across is a very slim friend who said she found feeding too draining and was losing weight, so she changed to bottle feeding - but that is because the baby was getting all the milk at her expense!
