Screaming

by StaceycridComment Published at 01:3101:318 comments8 comments45 Visits45 VisitsReport

I have an almost 3 month old son,  he has started screaming about half hour after each feed and holding himself rigid. it starts just after lunch time and happens after every feed till about 11pm. I thought it may have been something I have eaten but I haven't eaten anything different to normal, I did get my first period the day after it started so I am thinking hormone changes???  Could this be possible, has anyone else had this or know of anyone who has had a similar experience?

As he is feeding every 2 hours during the day it is getting quite alot. I have never heard him cry like this before, it is quite upsetting, he is still passing wind like normal, and bowels are normal so this is the only thing I can think of.

going over my legs on his tummy and patting his back doesn't help he screams more, being upright doesn't make all that much difference, we just have to walk around jiggling and rocking him until he stops walking around helps a little but he still cries.  he stops late at night then sleeps and feeds fine during the night, no complaints.

Any Ideas??  Please help.............I may however get him checked out by the doctor.  but in the meantime......................

I'm going crazy

Re: Screaming

sounds to me like colic - my first born had it too. You can buy colic syrup at the chemist to relieve the symptomes. My baby boy would usually poo or pass a lot of wind within half an hour of taking the syrup!  Good luck! Babies usually grow out of this by 6 months. It is caused by immature digestive systems. Breastfeeding babies can suffer too.

Re: Screaming

It sounds like reflux. My twins suffered from reflux as well. I only noticed it one night when I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard one of the gagging. I jumped out of bed to see one of my girls with spit up coming out of her nose. I looked it up online the next day and found some symptoms of reflux. It never dawned on me, but as soon as I read the symptoms everything clicked together.  My twins were cranky about 30 minutes after breastfeeding. For me, I noticed this more in the middle of the night. And they also would extend their legs straight and scream. I took them to the pediatrician and we were given reflux medicine.

My girls outgrew the reflux pretty fast, thank goodness. I think I only had to give them medicine for about 3 months or so. They are now almost 12 months and have no problem at all.

Watch what you eat. Stay away from spicy foods, and any other foods that you notice causes such pain.

Good luck to you!

Re: Screaming

I'd say go to the dr...  If he was a newborn i would say reflux or even intolerance or food allergies (have you eaten anything like nuts or egg lately?), but if this has just started, that doesn't sound right.  I found when my periods started and still when I have them my little girl refuses the breast - just for about 24 hours, so it obviously does taste different.  Otherwise I don't really know what to suggest. Sorry!

Re: Screaming

I have had nuts before and no worries, I did eat egg last week and on Sunday which is when the really bad screaming started, I didn't think he was allergic to it cause I ate it a while ago but he was pretty colicky then so I wouldn't have noticed a difference, so possibly egg??  How long would it take to get out of my system??  actually thinking of it I ate the egg and it was after the next feed he started.  hhmmmm,   thankyou for that I will definately make sure I don't eat egg again

 Thanks

Re: Screaming

It just sounded very similar to my niece before she was diagnosed - she would go all stiff and arch her back and didn't want to be touched as though it was hurting.  It took my sil a while to work out what it was.  I hope it is not that, but that may be something to look out for and mention to your dr.

Re: Screaming

He might have colic or reflux? My bub was the same for a while. Til my chemist put me onto a medicine called donnalix. It's for infant colic. It took about 24 hours and he was fine.

If you think it may be colic, you could try posture (sp) feeding. Have him lie on top of you to feed. That way the milk isnt going straight down his throat, and he has to work for it a little bit. Or another position that really worked for me is to have him sitting facing you, one leg on either side of your leg and have him sitting up drinking. Sort of like he is riding a horse. I hope that makes sense...

Hope he is feeling better soon.

Re: Screaming

Could it be colic? I know that babies who are breastfeed tend not to suffer from colic but the symptoms sound very much like colic.

Re: Screaming

we had colic from the start and he was pretty bad till 9 weeks this just started happening all of a sudden so I tend to think it is something else. I have tried some remedies for colic with no help. So I'm unsure. it just seemed that the screaming and my period came together, the crying the day before wasn't very bad then I got it and his crying was soo bad I nearly took him to the hospital it scared me.
