having trouble expressing

by mumdownunderComment Published at 17:5717:574 comments4 comments30 Visits30 VisitsReport

i have been successfully breastfeeding for four months and decided to express some milk to have on standby in the freezer and so dad could help out with feeds now and then, i bought a manual pump (Avent) but i could only get 20mls at the most at a time from one breast and nothing from the other, i decided to hire an electric pump (Ameda) and i have the same problem 20 mls from one side, the milk flows for a few minutes then stops, but i get  nothing from the other side. this even happens if i am expressing when he has missed a feed so there is plenty there it just wont come out.  Are there some people who are just unable to express their milk?

Sounds like you might have it sussed now but i was going to add  sometimes if you think about your baby...you know those lovey dovey feelings,  that can trigger let down as well.  I felt let down as a prickly sort of feeling.

I agree with MegKelly. It all has to do with let down. If you don't experience a let down when you pump, you wouldn't get that much milk.  In addition to the great suggestions, you can try massaging your nipples before you pump. Once you feel a let down, you should get a lot more milk.

A lot of it has to do with 'let down'.  Do your breasts feel full?  I would suggest putting warm towels on your breasts or try doing it sitting down in the shower.  The key is to relax, have your bub next to you and try.  Give it a go for at least 20mins and dont focus on it, have the TV going and it will flow.

Is your Bub getting milk ok?

yes bub is getting plenty of milk and is thriving, the thing with the 'let down' is i have only ever felt it once when i had thrush and feeding was very painful, i never feel the let down when i feed him, i tried again tonight when he had skipped a feed, i got 90mls all up. When the milk stopped flowing i gave my breast a bit of a squeeze and a massage and out it came. I was shocked to see so much milk in the bottle. thankyou for your advice
