help with blocked ducts

by StaceycridComment Published at 21:4521:452 comments2 comments20 Visits20 VisitsReport

I woke up this morning with a very blocked milk duct, I've never had one before and I'm wondering if anyone has any great ideas for getting rid of them, I've read to massage them down during and after feeding and to use warm compresses before feeding.

Can you get rid of it in one feed or is it a process? Any more ideas for getting rid of it?

it is sooo painful, please help, I really don't know what I am doing.

Re: help with blocked ducts

Sorry it took me so long to notice this post. I hope you're all better now.

The next time you have a blocked duct, it is best to put baby on that breast and concentrate on it. You can feed baby there for longer. I know you think you'll be lopsided, but you should be if you only do it for 2 feedings or so. Babies are better at emptying the breast.  If your block is bad, then it may be a process that will take 2-3 feedings.

Also, at the same time, you can massage your breast while taking a warm shower. Massage from the base to the tip.  You may have to be a little hard, and it may hurt, but that's a whole lot easier for you than suffering from mastitis.

Spot on with the massage and heat - warm showers are good for both, just aim the shower head where the duct is.  I was also told to make sure baby's nose is pointing towards the duct as that is where the strongest suck is.  And, apparently cabbage leaves....
