Publicity

by hrs2004Comment Published at 15:2115:219 comments9 comments180 Visits180 VisitsReport

Well, I was driving home from holiday yesterday and got to thinking about Minti to while away the drive. This is what I have come up with for publicity:

  • Instead of just the refer a friend email (which I have sent to friends, even with a message and they thought was spam), could we have a space on registration where a person could input who referred them, instead of relying on links through from the email. That way I can tell people about Minti in my own way and let them log on in their own time.
  • Could Minti produce some leaflets, maybe A5 size, with a space for my name and username on, that outlines what Minti is about. I can then hand them out to other Mums at our music and toddler groups. Minti can send me maybe 50 or 100 and I can easily get these out to people.
  • If this isn't an option, could we have a link through to a lovely page that tells all about Minti and that I can put in my email (although I much prefer the idea of paper so that I can get the messgae wider).
  • For everyone who signs up through me, I get an entry to a monthly draw. I thought that an ideal prize / prizes would be an Amazon gift voucher as Amazon seem to be worldwide, they have a big choice of goods and there is no customs! The winner could chose books, CDs, films etc, or childrens books as they prefer. You can choose the number and amount of prizes so you know exactly what your outlay would be.
  • When I win a monthly draw, the person who I signed up for that entry also wins - a Minti bag. This gets the message out, wouldn't attract customs charges, and is an incentive for people to put my name down on sign up. I have found the messenger bag to be really useful in size (although scary in colour!).
  • I was going to suggest a monthly draw or random prizes offered for good articles, helpfulness etc, but I see you have beaten me to it on that one!
  • Finally, although slightly to one side, Minti beginning a pro-forma 'reviews' section - anyone can review products in set categories using a pro-forma (pros, cons, costs etc) and free-text form. This would increase the number of hits to the website and hence the profile of the website.

That's all I have for now!

RE: Marketing/PR Suggestions...
I finally found some time to address these suggestions! ;)
  1. When you send the refer a friend. Did your friends act on them and sign up? Would be good feedback. In regards to your suggestion... I am not sure I understand the benefit it provides? Lets say you tell "Judy" to sign up at Minti and she signs up and then fills in the field asking who referred her and she fills it in "hrs2004". What/who does this benefit, other than the ability for us to track active referring members? Am i missing something here? :)
  2. Rachel keeps hounding me about Leaflets also! ;) We will discuss at our MASSIVE fortnightly meeting! ;)
  3. It seems as though we dont really have a page which explains what Minti is about and it's purpose. Is this correct?
  4. Like the referrer prize. (Now i see the relevance to point 1 above). We actually had this as a dedicated possible prize prior to launching the broad Roomba competition. We may be expanding the roomba prize and have prizes for the best advice, the most referals, the best comment... etc. Also like the Amazon suggestion, we are aware of this - thanks for reminding us.
  5. like this suggestion. ties in nicely. maybe the bag could be fluro pink? ... just kidding ;)
  6. yep - we are largely doing this with the broad competition.. but as suggested in point 4 above we will be narrowing down on certain activities in the future.
  7. yes we like and are thinking about. fair way off at the moment though.
Keep it coming ;)

WOW! That is some brainstorming!

Somebody has been thinking. Sorry I have had nappy brain for the past 7 years - please forgive me. I like the idea of the leaflets too personally as I would find it easier to let others know about minti. I am only new to the net and don't have all my aquaintenances on email, IYKWIM.

I like the idea of having a review section too.

We have some little round invite cards being printed atthe moment.
just 250 that Rachel is going to take to Blogher and test.
I think they come out at about 25 cents each so we will see how they go and explore printing more, and if so... how we get them to our members that want them quite cheaply ;)

If you do go down the line of having some printed and sent out, perhaps you could get a volunteer or two from each country. You could then send them the leaflets and they could distribute them locally as required - probably cheaper postage that way, I imagine.

Also, find a cheap printers in each country that can take your design over the web, and have them sent out direct from there, also making postage cheaper. I have had a quick look at Vistaprint who are UK based and charge less than 50p per flyer with custom design. More than you current option, but they give an idea.

Why not do what Meetup does. Have a PDF that people can print. With a tiny bit of work you could also have a PDF generated on the fly: a member could enter a few details, like name, etc. and this is generated a long with the PDF.

does meetup use this the same way we are suggesting... so members can give to people they know?
or do you mean meetup uses it for people to print so people know what table to sit at when groups are meeting up? ;)
can you point me in the direction of one?
thanks rich ;)
cheers - clay
