pre-frozen fast foods.

by Libby24Comment Published at 00:5800:589 comments9 comments69 Visits69 VisitsReport

I want opinions on the pre frozen fast foods like fish fingers and all those aimed at kiddie.

After watching the jamie oliver doing the school dinners in UK i am totally unsure of it.

atm i dont give the kids these foods but i wanna start eating at home again as we eat out most night due to hubby and i dont like to cook. so i thought if these foods are ok then i will buy them. we do have a few dinners at home like spag bol and simple things like that.

so are these fish fingers and chicken nuggets ect ok for the kids or are they crap and as bad as mc donalds?

Well i would say when you have a burst of energy to make a whole lot up and freeze them. fish fingers are really easy to make and i make chicken bits where i chop up the fish or chicken into strips and crumb them. then i put them in a freezer container. cheaper than buying them from the shop and its a lot better for you.

These are ok as a treat - we have them once a fortnight & I buy the ones that have the biggest % of fish & chicken in them. There are also some great chicken and vegetable things you can get that are full of goodies & great for a treat - my youngest loves them!

Re: pre-frozen fast foods.

You need to check the nutrition panel but most of the cheaper brands only have a small % of actual fish or chicken in them.  There is no reason why you can't crumb some fish or chicken and cook them in the oven instead.  If you don't like cooking, then get hubby to crumb it the night before or during the day.

I very rarely give these to my eldest, she now prefers chicken wings and drumsticks baked in the oven.

However, Steggles are the better ones from Coles or Woolies however Aldi have chicken nuggest that are breast and they are nice.  For the fish fingers I only bought Birdseye.

I would say they are ok if you buy good quality ones, there are ones that are 100% fish or chicken, just check the salt content. I give Ruby the more expensive ones, the cheap ones tend to be so because the meat is not good quality. And we all need a break from cooking sometimes! Also serve them with veges and maybe mash potatoe instead of chips. Although oven baked chips are ok a couple of times a week, I think its worse for them if fried. Thanks for the add btw! Em x

Re: pre-frozen fast foods.

I think it should be what we call "sometimes food" - we have them every so often but not every night.  That said, some are better than others and if you look at the nutrition panel it will tell you the percentages of fat, salt and sugar - these will give you some idea.  If you watch Jamie you will see that he has some great ideas for healthy food that is quick and easy.

Just thinking, though, if you're eating out a lot - depending on where you are eating out, these could be a good, healthier option - it really depends!

Re: pre-frozen fast foods.

They are probably like Maccas. The main thing that is bad about Maccas etc. is that there is no colour in there food. If you lay it out on a plate it has no vegies or salad. I have these in the freezer for slack nights too though. Saves petrol in going out to the fast foods during the dinner times and these places are no longer fast food. At certain times you are waiting a long time for this food and half the time I feel it isn't prepared properly. It doesn't even taste nice. The kids are hungry not long after you get back home, etc. I don't see anything wrong with getting them for nights when you dont want to cook. I also buy the frozen vegies. I saw on the news that they are pretty good when compared to the fresh vegies in the supermarket. Something to do with the long storage times. Cooking isn't my best activity either though it is the preparation that takes so long. If the preparation is done beforehand it is not such a hard task. I find thinking of what to cook the hardest. If you have the time, a weekly plan is the best so that you have all the ingredients there and you know what needs to be done. I used to be organised once! LOL

I would say that they are Ok for a once in a while. I have them in my freezer. The kids sometimes have them for afternoon tea. But we have them for dinner too. So long as you give them vegies to go with it, it isn't too bad. Tho I must admit, I like making my own chicken nuggets with chicken breast. If I buy them I try to buy the Baiada Tempura Nuggets.
