We have found the English version of this poem, written in the 1950s, helpful in encouraging children with the words we use. This Romanian version will hopefully be just as useful for parents:

Dacă un copil trăieşte cu dezaprobare
El învaţă să condamne.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu ostilitate,
El învaţă să lupte.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu ridiculizare,
El învaţă să fie timid.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu ruşine,
El învaţă să se simtă vinovat.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu toleranţă,
El învaţă să fie răbdător.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu încurajare,
El învaţă să aibă încredere.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu laudă,
El învaţă să-i aprecieze pe ceilalţi.
Dacă un copil trăieşte cu nepărtinire,
El învaţă dreptatea.

El învaţă să aibă credinţă.

Hi, there.

We are from England but now living and working in Oradea, Judetul Bihor. We are parents of four adult children. We are involved in working with children who have emotional difficulties and also teaching parenting skills. We have learnt so much from raising our own children and want to pass on those skills to others. We love working here. We travel regularly to Arad and Timisoara and occasionally elsewhere. The picture shows us at a children's camp in the beautiful mountains above Pietroasa, near Beius. We did some play therapy with the children. It was a great success. Some of the children were able to express grief over the death of their parents while others were able to have a more positive self-image through confidence building activities.
