I have already blogged my homebirth in the Birth experiences group - you can read it here. It was the best thing for me - much more relaxing, and no worrying about when to go in or babysitting! And in the UK instead of sharing one midwife to 6ish in hospital you get 2 midwives to yourself at home! Infinitely better (and cheaper for the NHS too). And no antibiotic-resistant infections to worry about...!
This is a great site if you're considering a homebirth (it's a UK site but has international links). Great advice & stories for getting you confidence up! And there are Yahoo groups for asking questions etc which informed me greatly too. My local NCT group also has a Homebirth co-ordinator who does 3 or 4 coffee evenings a year where an independant midwife, a homebirthed mum and enquirers come along and chat. I got a lot out of it, and so did DH 3 months later!
I understand in Holland the presumtion is for Homebirth, and all low-risk pregnancies start their labour at home and transfer to hospital if the midwife or the woman feels it necessary, whereas the presumption in the UK is still that women will want to go into hospital and you're being "brave" to labour at home (actually, it's safer statistically). In the UK, 2% of births are at home, while 32% of Dutch babies are born at home (with a third transferring to hospital during the labour).
Anyway, if you're at all tempted, think about it - you can change your mind any time, almost up to the point of delivery! And while not all midwives are supportive, most are, and the government are currently trying to promote homebirths so it can only improve. |
