Checking your food is safe....

by kseersComment Published at 17:2117:210 comments0 comments11 Visits11 VisitsReport

It  can be tricky finding out which products are safe for your child - the contact checking is very time consuming.  I have come across 2 websites that can help:

http://www.eatingsafe.com.au/

http://www.freedomfoods.com.au/

Both Australian - sorry!  These are a great source of information - though one is easier to navigate than the other.  I'm not sure it should replace constantly checking as companies change their processes and ingredients all the time (and it can even depend on which batch you buy) but it could be a good starting point.

Silly ?

by HarrisonsMommyComment Published at 08:2508:253 comments3 comments19 Visits19 VisitsReport

When they say tree nuts, that isn't peanuts is it?  Peanuts are grown in the ground and are usually in a category all their own.  Honestly havent' done the research to clarify that...just thought of it

And have found all but the cooking chocolate...will find it though...am searching!  Tammy, will let you know when I go shopping so you can fill me in.

Thanks-Angela

chocolates that are free from nuts and peanuts

by Tammy13Comment Published at 19:0819:086 comments6 comments22 Visits22 VisitsReport

In respond to HarrisonsMommy last blog here is some info and photos:

1) we found (especially having a husband that is a pastry cook ...) that LIBER'S SEMI SWEET CHOCOLATE & BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE are the best for cooking. we get them only in Coles Bondai Sydney or in the Jewish grocery of Bondai. This Chocolate is imported from New York. I will take photos later and publish them here. it is a great dark chock (can also be eaten as is). 400 gram (huge) cost approx $7 but it is good and we don't have much choice.

2. these are no nut products sold usually in K-Mart or Target

3. lots of Betty Crocker products (mix to make cookies, choc & vanilla frosting etc) are nut free. Can find them in most supermarkets. (sorry - no photo at the moment but the choc-chip cookie mix is great!)

4. TWIX choc bar is free of nuts

5. KINDER CHOCOLATE BARS & SURPRISE EGGS rae good also

6. AERO choc by Nestle is free from nuts cause it's produced in England.

sorry no photo at the moment. you can get them in reg choc flavour or mint flavour.

7. bites (I think they sell them in Coles and Woolworth). Please note that some flavours of this "bites"do have peanuts traces and some - like the one in the photo below) don't.

but again - always read the labels before you buy. I always do although I buy them frequently.

I will look in the pantry to see if I have more...

Is there any chocolate?

by HarrisonsMommyComment Published at 22:5122:513 comments3 comments12 Visits12 VisitsReport

Tammy, you have been around doing this for a while.  Is there any chocolate to eat or cook with that doesn't have the warning?  Have yet to come across any.  How frustrating is that!

LIVING WITH THE CONSTANT FEAR THAT MY SON WILL DIE

by Tammy13Comment Published at 04:2604:264 comments4 comments22 Visits22 VisitsReport

That's what anaphylaxis allergy is all about.

Going to the supermarket, taking a product from the shelf, reading the ingredients label and all the warnings, coming back home, taking the product out of the shopping bag, reading again the label and putting it in the pantry, and when he asks to eat that, reading it again before opening the package, and after all these 4-5 times of label-reading - still being afraid that the manufacturer made a mistake. That I missed the announcement on the radio about food recall. or worst, that I made a mistake and missed something in those small letters labels.

Leaving him at a friend's house to play with her child, and although I know she is very responsible and understand the meaning of this allergy and checks everything - I also know she is human, and anything can happen.

Sending him to school, and although teachers and principal assured me that everything was done and will be done to eliminate the risk - I am scared to death. Scared that some child will bring peanut butter sandwich to school, in spite of the school request. Scared that some idiot parent will decide that school's request not to bring peanut butter is discriminating their child (who loves peanut butter), and this idiot parent decides that their child should enjoy peanut butter although my son might die from it.

Being scared of my own son. Because the burden that has been put on his shoulders since he was a baby, about this peanut allergy and the death associated with it, is too much for a child. And it is so so sad! Sometimes, when the ice-cream van drives through our street, playing its music, Gilad looks at me seriously and say: "that's the ice-cream man. But I can't have it". And I say "yes" and praise him for his understanding, but oh do I cry inside my heart! I know he is trying to be brave, I know he is fed up with just eating Mac's when we are going out, I know he doesn't shed a tear when all the kids in his class eat a birthday ice-cream cake and he gets a slice we sent from home, and I know he is only a child. And I am so much afraid that one day this burden will be too much, and as a child, he will say, "I don't care, I want that and I am going to eat that!" and there will be no one to stop him. And I am so much afraid of that and so much hoping it won't happen.

I will keep fighting the world that doesn't want to understand. I will keep staying away from people who don't care, even if they are family. I will keep reading labels 5, 6 and 1000 times, even if people will think I am crazy. I will keep taking the mobile with me wherever I go, when I’m not with him. I will keep protecting him from people's ignorance and from peanuts.

Because I am so much scared. I DON'T WANT MY SON TO DIE.

The good thing that comes out of having an anaphylaxis child...

by Tammy13Comment Published at 00:0100:011 comments1 comments8 Visits8 VisitsReport

1)    When you go out somewhere, you prepare food at home to take with you – therefore you save money and most likely the food is healthier and fresher.

2)    Your anaphylaxis child, eventually, learns not to nag Ï want this “I want that””buy me this” “buy me that”

3)    While going through the ingredients and warnings of the food package before buying it, you learn allot about what is actually being put in the food, and you start to think twice if you really want to buy it (regardless to the allergy warning)

4)    Your child is becoming more aware and sensitive to other people’s health problems (not just allergies), and more than that – your child becomes tolerant and open-minded more than some adults you know...

5)    So do you. You didn’t know, didn’t understand and sometimes didn’t want to know – until it happened in your own home.

In a way – I am glad my son is anaphylactic. It did me good.
