Bright Ideas » Group

After writing my advice about making inexpensive costumes, Meggles suggested it might be worth starting a group where we can keep adding ideas!

So if you have any ideas for kids costumes, birthday cakes, party games or anything that requires a bit of creativity and lateral thinking, this is the place to share it.  Hopefully this will become a bit of an archive of all those crazy ideas and we can help each other to improve on our own ideas.

Party Loot bags ideas

by cheekymonkeyComment Published at 04:4204:420 comments0 comments93 Visits93 VisitsReport

I thought I would put this here...I am planning Grub's 3rd birthday party and it's a thomas theme..you know cake balloons etc. I'm personally not a fan of loot bags full of lollies, as I think they have enough junk food at the party. So I got creative (sooo scary!!) and this is what thier bags are going to have in them

  • small Thomas & friends book, female characters for the girls eg rosie, mavis, lady etc males for the boys    from big w                          $2.50each
  • train shaped whistles from spotlight                                $0.40 each
  • thomas chocolates , divide the pack, from big w            $3.50 box
  •  thomas crayons again from big w and split the pack   $2.50 pack
  • and the finale is a cd I have created of all of Grub's favourite songs so the kids have a long lasting memory of the party.

I'm hoping the kids enjoy it as much as I have in creating it!

Another cake...

by WendigoComment Published at 00:0300:032 comments2 comments44 Visits44 VisitsReport

I did this one today with a left over sponge from doing OzBinky's birthday cake (which was a Minti cake by the way). Aidan said he wanted a blue cake with a red back spider and white spiderweb. I was cooking dinner at the same time and he was bugging the hell out of me, so this was just a 10 minute rushed freehand job. Turned out okay though.

Baby Shower Games

by MadMelComment Published at 22:4722:470 comments0 comments53 Visits53 VisitsReport
Another couple we played was...

Pair The Socks
Everyone brings a pair of baby socks. Then they all get seperated and put in a bowl. You get 30 seconds to pair as many as you can. Trust me ITS NOT EASY LOL. This was a hoot and the mummy to be gets a whole heap of baby socks.

Dont Say Baby
Everyone gets a paper necklace at the start of the day. And if you catch someone saying baby you take their necklace and any that they have gathered also. At the end of the shower the person with the most wins a little prize.

Baby Bingo
Everyone gets a bingo grid and when they first arrive they write what they think the mummy to be will get in her presents (bib, nappies, rocker, jumpsuit etc) with the one rule that it cant be something you have given. When its present time you cross off things that you have written down when she recieves them and the first person to cross off all the things (usually a grid of 6-8) wins.

Nappy Change
You bring a baby doll and time everyone. The person to get the nappy on the baby doll the fastest wins.

Find The Bands
Get a jar and fill it with rice. Get a packet of tiny rubber bands (anything like Bracer Bands) and mix them through. Then you have 1 minute to find as many as you can. It's very hard to feel the bands in the rice!

Baby Shower Games

by lightbeeComment Published at 01:4101:410 comments0 comments154 Visits154 VisitsReport

These are the suggestions I put in response to a recent Q&A asking for games to play at a baby shower.  Hope they help other people.

These are some I've seen played before:

Guess the tummy - everyone writes down what they think the pregnant ladies current tummy measurement is and once everyone's guessed you measure and the closest wins a prize.

Guess the date/sex - This doesn't have a winner cause you don't know till the baby is born, but it's an opportunity for everyone to record when they think the baby will be born and (if you don't already know) the gender and the weight.

Observation game - A number of baby related products - e.g. a nappy, powder, dummy, bottle, nappy bags, etc. etc. are placed on a tray and the players are allowed to look at the tray for about 20-30 seconds.  Then the tray is covered over and everyone has to try and remember as many objects as they can.  The winner is the one who remembers the most objects.  The whole tray of objects can then be given to the mummy-to-be as a present.

Guess the nappy - This one of the most gross looking games, but for all that, is one of the most amusing.  You get a number of different chocolate bars.  They are then smooshed into separate disposal nappies.  The participants then check the nappies (which should be labelled A, B, C etc.) and have to try and work out which chocolate bar is in which nappy.

Dice game - You sit in a circle and everyone has a piece of paper and a pen.  A dice is passed around the circle (or 2 or 3 dice at different points of the circle for a quicker game or a large group).  If you get a 6 you draw a body, 1 you draw a head (including face), 2 for a nappy, 3 for an arm, 4 for a leg, 5 for hair.  The idea is to be the first to draw a baby.  You have to get a 6 for a body before you can do any other parts.  And you have to get a 1 for the head before you can do hair.  You have to get 3 and 4 twice (only one arm or leg each time) and usually there are 6 hairs on the head.  Have a picture for people to check out so they know where they're up to.

I've also seen trivia or anagram puzzles that are baby related.  Have fun!

Some of the cakes I've done

Or at least these are the one's I've got electronic copies of.  I'll get more scanned later.  I'm more into 3-dimensional cakes as they are more challenging, though the motorcycle cake was very hard to do as the picture is piped on and the detail was phenomenally hard to get right.
