The waves rolled in nonchalantly. they crashed on impact with the half-submerged rocks, and dumped their baggage of sand. I looked down from my hiding place upon the grassy hills at this melodical action. The evening breeze tossed the sand this way and that , as if the sand had discovered a mind of its own and was now searching for a home.
I sprung from my vantage point and walked along the shore . With every step my feet sunk into the mushy mixture of water and sand . The broken waves lapped at my feet softly. As i looked at the beach i realized the complete contrast in this setting and the setting of the day before.
I had woken up , completely oblivious to the outside world.I had slept in , past my pre-arranged waking time. I dressed quickly, stopping only to throw a speedy glance at the mirror, and check my appearance. I hopped on my bike and pedalled furiously towards my destinaion. From a distance i spied the clear blue of the ocean. The sun's reflection made the water twinkle like a set of diamonds in the light.
I rode faster and even more furiously than before, eager to reach the soft sand and the coolness of the crystal clear water.i locked my bike up and approached the beach. A cool, soothing breeze accompanied the sizzling heat of the forceful sun. The grass, as if reacting to a salsa rhythym, swayed to and fro, a byproduct of the wind's strength. I stared at the rows of people, bewildered. How could a beach which was deserted less than six hours ago, flow with buzz of human activity.
My eyes wondered aimlessly around the beach. Beach umbrellas dotted the sandy coast with their users squashed in like sardines in a can, nevertheless having fun, and enjoying themselves immensely. Children played on the edge of the water's surface, spades and buckets in hands , slinging wet sand and building sandcastles. In the water , kids were on their bodyboards catching the smallest waves and yelping with joy.
The people waded in the ankle-deep water dam of the sand-break. This proved to be very useful for the mothers who wanted to bathe their toddlers. Further out a group of wind-surfers headed past the pier. On the pier itself many fishermen struggled to maintain their positions, all the time battling their most dangerous enemy, the elements.
A volleyball game started and along nearby parklands , the children were using the facilities to their benefit. I removed the bag that was slung around my shoulder. I set up my towel, stripped down to my bathers and ran towards the water. That's when i spied a group of dark clouds hovering in the sky, and then encircling the sun. And that's when it came.
The rain fell in huge clumps soaking the coarse sand. In a matter of seconds the beach was evacuated.I was standing on the beach alone undistracted by the plummeting rain which flattened my spiked hair. Wasting no time, i dived in alone free as a bird, a water-bird that is.
this was written by my son harry in year 10 when he was 15(he was a year younger than the others of his school level)
he was asked by the teacher who his audience is and the purpose of the title and this is what he had to say
My audience would be students around my age and older. i chose the beach as my title because i have a holiday house in Rye and spend most of my time with friends at the beachfront
