Its available here where I live and anyone can get it...I am wondering what you think of getting it or not getting it, the pros and cons. We have a dilemma, its a personal decision for my husband and myself but we also have the responsibility of deciding for our 4 year old and 7 month old.
Would you or wouldn't you get it for yourself and/or your children?
It's about to be available here in the UK for at risk people, so DH & DD1 will have to decide soon. They got the winter flu jab a couple of weeks ago, it's a no-brainer as they have asthma, but with Swine Flu we are still thinking.
DD1s best friends mum got it and had an ok-ish time, though she is asthmatic. Sounds like it's everywhere here now - the nurse at the Practise said most people arent reporting it as it is usually more mild than winter flu, just those who feel rough because of an underlying condition (like her asthma).
I was listening to an interview with a leading health person on the radio and he explained why prenant women are dying - your immune system has to be supressed while you're pregnant or it would attack the baby, plus the nearer the end of the pregnancy the smaller your lung capacity - so a double whammy - hence the fatalities.
He said the million dollar question is why do most people get it mildly and a few die - they havent worked that out yet. As DH & DD1s asthma isnt too bad, we may risk it & not get the jab. But it's a big risk.... As he explained, most of us have a level of immunity to the winter flu as it only mutates a bit each winter, whereas Swine Flu is new to all of us.
I agree with the others on , that hasn't been enough testing done on this vaccine.
This would be hard to decision to wrangle with, whether or not to have A & B vaccinated. I think if there was any reported cases in your area, I would have to consider them having the shot.....or talk to my doctor about it.
I did discuss it with our doctor, personally he is not getting it, he is of the same mind as so many people, there hasn't been enough testing. After saying that he thinks that B. should get it...its a tough call for sure.
In the media its the 2nd wave everyone is concerned with, what I am wondering is, will the '2nd wave' be the same virus as the 1st wave? No one knows...
At this stage I am not getting it. I apparently am supposed to get a flu shot every year but I never do. Such a hard decision to make for the children I am sure!
They too have it available here now at the doctors. When i went in for my last GP appointment a week ago, I couldnt believe how crowded the room was with people waiting to be vaccinated. It was mainly the elderly who wanted it.
In my opinion I too dont trust the level of testing they have done so far, this flu only became know to us earlier in the year and now they have a vaccination for it. When i saw the advertisement on the tv about the free shots i just immediately said to my husband, no we are not getting it as i still feel there isnt enough tests done. Especially i dont want risking my unborn baby if something went wrong. In fact i have never got any sort of flu vaccination at all and i have been fine. My hubby however in the last 2 years got a free flu vaccination at work and each time afterwards he ended up very ill so this year i told him he is not going to get it and he never got sick as bad as he did when he did get the flu shots.
We have free vaccination at my work.... It is recommended that all health care workers get vaccinated. I don't know enough about it yet to make a decision, have to do some research on it. It is also recommended for pregnant women to have it. So I am wondering since I am a heath care worker and also may become preggers should I get it?
It is free so what is the harm? What are the risks? that is why I have to get all my facts straight and pros and cons etc..
Angie when I talked to my doctor about this flu shot....he told me flu shot is not like the normal flu shot you would get normally.
He said the stats, here in Australia are this flu is not effecting the elderly as much as it is effecting people from 16 to 36 years old and woman that are pregnant are the high risk.
If you might become pregnant, I think the benefits of having the shot would out weigh the risks of not having it.
I will do some research as I said but when I spoke to J about it he stated that it would be a wise thing for me to do, have the vaccine, so I am considering having it. People that I work with have had it and they have had no problems and have not got sick 'cause of it..
its also available here but we have decided not to get it at this point in time. i dont feel very good about the level of testing that has been done and also, my kids got the flu shot this year and still got the flu so i have my doubts on how effective flu vaccines are because of their ability to mutate.
if it really needs to be done later on and my doc tells me it really should be dont ill reconcider.
I was wondering about the flu vac as well, when you get vaccinated they do it with one strain of the flu that may be going around that year that is to say we who get vaccinated may not get another strain (different type) of the flu. I never really get that sick so this year I opted out.
It is free at our work and also recommended that all health care workers get vaccinated. hmmm something to really think about
Such a good question and one that is on everyone's mind. I dislike the fact it is so untested. The viral properties could mutate well before the flu gets here and render the shot useless. There are dangers with every shot, we know that but what are the dangers of not having the shot? Specially with kiddies and the fact it is hitting the prime population instead of the older. Pregnant woman seem more at risk too. It is an evil flu and how do we best protect against it? I wonder what our lovely Ladies will find out? I look forward to seeing your answers on such an important topic. What are your feelings about it simplyme01ca?
I agree that this virus could mutate again and again rendering the vaccination useless, also it hasn't been tested and that scares me the most.
I am not getting it, my husband is not getting it and we don't think A. will be getting it...its B. that most of our concern is for, he is in a high risk group, 6-24 months old. The vaccination has not had the proper testing, the thought of getting it for B. leaves me with a bad feeling and a but...
Well they said under 6 months, no shot, 6 months to 9 years the shot in two doses 20 days apart. Even my Hubby said what? There is a huge difference between 6 months and 9 years! I don't know, B is closer to 6 months than 9 years in my thinking or may be there is better info out there. The risk is the factor? ?? Is it in your community, how long ahead do you have to have it in your system to have effect? Are they tracking the changes in the virus. It apparently infected a flock of turkeys here??? Really puzzling, are they tracking the right virus and if it has lept speicies is it safe to figure it has altered???
