Febrile Convulsions » Group

This group is where parents of children who experience febrile convulsions can have a chat and just get a bit of support and get through the ordeal. Knowing there may be more episodes, sometimes you just need to find a shoulder to lean on.

Hi my daughter was unwell not long ago, i put her to bed and about an hour after she woke up just screaming (8months old)... my husband got her out of her cot and she was shaking... just shivering.. and blueish around the mouth.. we rushed her straight to hospital... turns out she had a very high temp and they wanted her in over night.. i over heard the nurse tell another she was possibly febrile... luckily she didnt convulse but its put me on alert ever since....

Does every child stop breathing? as the nurse told me that if it happens she wouldnt stop breathing.. but when i worked in daycare we had a child that febriled and required cpr...

2 weeks ago my 2.5 yr old had his first febrile convulsion.  It came out of nowhere.  10 minutes before the convulsion he was sitting at the table eating and talking as normal.  He usually has a shower at night with his little brother so when I undressed him I thought he was a little warm and was going to give him panadol & take his temp after his shower.  We didn't get that far. He collapsed on me in the shower.  I wasn't sure what was wrong so I called 000 (I'm glad I did) we put him on the floor on his side but he stopped breathing, he went limp and cold and of course that terrifying blue colour.  We got him breathing again just as the ambulance arrived.  It turned out that he had tonsilitis.  After an overnight stay in hospital we came home.

The thing is Liam showed NO signs at all that he was unwell, he played as normal all day, was not at all flushed or whingy he was perfectly normal.

He wasn't sleepy straight away he seemed to be very vague and didn't recognise me or his father for a long time, it seemed that the thing that brought him back was when they started sticking him with needles.

All in all it was a very scary experience and not one my husband and I hope to go through again.

Hi all

My son is now a healthy 10 year old but as a toddler he suffered from febrile convulsions and was rushed to hospital a couple of times in the back of an ambulance. These every time were very scary!

I found that my sons convulsions were linked to head colds and each time he had a cold his temperature would go up too quickly for his little body to cope with and so it basically shuts down and goes into a febril convulsion. Most children will not have febrile convulsions past the age of 5 and this has been the case with my son.

If anyone wants to ask me anything I will gladly respond in which ever way I can.

what to do

by Deborahsc2203Comment Published at 14:0014:000 comments0 comments24 Visits24 VisitsReport

things i do when he is fitting

have them on their side so that they wont choke or swollow  their ( vomit if they do )or siliva

wet cloth on their head and also a blanket near by as they seem to get cold shakes after their fitt has stopped and have to be warmed up again

call the ambos or str8 to the doc for monitering

Having a fever and fitt diary is great as you are asked all sorts of questions and at the time you are soo worried with your child  it  can be hard to think str8 ,, they can just read your booklet that you have written with dates times high high the temps are and what you have done etc,,,

it also helps them to know the history of the fitts or tests done etc,,,,

But stay as calm as you as you are more helpful that way

scary to watch

by Deborahsc2203Comment Published at 13:5213:520 comments0 comments29 Visits29 VisitsReport

since my son was 8 months old and had cut his first tooth hes been getting fevers..once or twice a month without fail , we have ourselfs a fever diary dates of fevers what we gave him , times and temps  what we have done to get the fever down

lastyear he has his first Convulsion i had never experienced it before , he was next to me on the loung with a wet cloth on his head i just got up to get his meds and saw his head was bent back a little and his eyes where rolled right back ,,

it shocked me

i grabbed him and luck i live right next door to a doctor as i took him str8 there

he fitted for ten min then got the shakes , they gave him morthine that brang him out of the fitt

we went to the hospital and they checked him out ,, it was only then that i was told that it is hereditary,, so i had to do some digging and found out that i also at the age of 22 months had one  , and also my sisters brother i had no idea till themn

he had his second one two weeks to the day after the first one . his second one was the worst

he fitted for 20 min and started to turn blue right before the doc and i

this time the morthine didnt do anything for him ,, the ambos where called and they also had trouble getting him out of the fit , his hospital stay was longer that time and they still cant find the reason why it was soo bad,,every test was done and had come back normal

he also almost had a heart attach . his fit was from 4 pm and he didnt wake up till 11.30 pm that night , every mothers nightmere

.he cant go to childcare as he can pick up bugs from there that will set his fever off

we are always washing his hands and sterilizine things

we have worked out that the only way to controll the fever so that he wont fitt hopefully is to

give him panadole then 3 hours after that nurofen , luke warm showers wet cloths lots of water to drink ..and he sleeps right next to me so that i can monitor his temps ..

the panadole and nurofen are 6 hours apart from eachother but the meds are 3 hours apart from eachother IF YOU FOLLOW ME ?

that has worked so far and he hasnt had anymore fits ,, but he still gets a fever every few weeks without fail

we also write all the meds and the times and amount we give to him so that we dont give him a doubble dose of the same one at the wrong time

It hasnt affected his learning and we have been told that by the time hes 6 he would of grown out of the fitts ( great 4 more years to go )

we are going to see a specialist but the times hes had the last 3 fevers its been xmas and newyear and the specialist had been closed over that period aghhhh

the last fever was two weeks ago and also then the doc was at another office he had and i couldnt get there ...

its time again this week or the beginning of next week to have a fever again

hes got himself into a pattern ..

im not pesamistic   ,, im just prepared as one can get if you can be that way

Febrile Convulsions

by LlouellaComment Published at 04:5404:540 comments0 comments67 Visits67 VisitsReport

Hi all,

I thought creating this group would give parents the opportunity to discuss or just share their experience with others to help or just have a chat and receive some like minded support.

My daughter Roma 3/12yrs suffers from febrile convulsions and each episode has been different, the signs were different so they were very unexpected. It is very scary and you never get used to seeing these fits, I do feel better knowing what to expect (so far) when it does happen and how to handle the situation.

My experience thus far as each time has been different has been to call the ambulance....you never do know and these are our little angels in medical distress.
