What have I got myself in for........???

Comment Published at 16:0616:0617 comments17 comments34 Visits34 VisitsReport

Well about 3 weeks ago I joined the toy library... great idea, don't have to buy toys, and they get to go back so we don't have a mountain of toys piling up... Cool yes? Well, Until I got this letter yesterday.

I received a letter yesterday from the toy library stating that I am on the roster to man the library on a Saturday. I am on their roster. If I don't do it, it will cost me $20. I mean the cheek of them to do this with out asking me. When I joined up their was no mention that I would have to do the library duties.

Also the library is having a BBQ fundrasier and they would love it if I would put my name down to do a 2hrs shift.

My partner and I like to have time on our own on the W/end. I suppose it would be a great way to get out and about and to meet new people and hopefully meet some one with a bubs H's age. We are not that good at meeting people or doing things like this so it puts us off a bit.

Oh well, it is for a good cause and I may just only just enjoy myself and besides it will only be for 4 shifts a year. If I can't do the shift that I have been given then I have to ring someone up and swap! I don't even know these people yet!!!

Well it has got to be done and I will do it and who know what will happen.... Isn't this what having children is all about??

It would have been nice to be asked to do it, or at least mention it when I signed up.   Oh BTW I got a mention in their news letter as being a new member.

wow thats very rude and i would be asking to speak to the supervisor , as who ever got you to sign those forms should have explained all that to you...

But if you cool with it, go for it.. But dont let them pressure u into something u not comfortable with..

We pay an annual fee to use the toy library here, but it is $60 per year per family, as well as a rental fee per toy!  OMG!  Most of the toys are donated to them in the first place and they want us to chop fingers off just to look at what they have on offer.

I'm sure you will do fine and will soon feel part of the crowd.  Take the risk and just do it!!!!!!!

Our toy library is more expensive than that and we get 6 toys for our fee we could have chosen the lesser fee and only get 3 toys.

I just have to bite the bullet and do it I think.

the system itself is a great idea . what isnt great is the way it was thrust on you they should have at least explained it to you even if it was verbally at the beginning.

at least explain to them that since you wernt told about it earlier you are willing to tell them when you are available to volunteer your services.

when my children were little and i was on maternity leave i found it hard to shop with baby in pram

then i accidently stumbled across something run by the council where we could "drop off our children" friday mornings only to do shopping then we would drop a little money in the tin it was only a smalll amount to cover coffee and other costs there was a mother there that worked in there and got subsidised by the council. but we were expected to also give our services once every 4 weeks or so which worked out alright.

but the point i was making was that we were told about this from the beginning  and when we helped out there was alittle pressure but usually we told them when so we could organise ourselves. if one mum wasnt going to volunteer every week the council would have to close this service.

now there were other mums that somehow got out of it because i know i volunteered every 4 weeks and there certainly wernt just 4 mothers but i also saw that i had noone that lived close to me that i could leave my children with to do the shopping

usually it was for 3 hours which gave me plenty of time to go to butchers green grocer and supermarket for weekly shopping and quickly take it home and put my shopping away.

i hope you sort this out .

cheers annie

I am glad that you found something that could help you out.. I was good of them to also inform you that you would be doing some shifts.  I wish the toy library was like that

What?  That is a bit dodgy isn't it?!?!  Grrrr don't you hate that feeling of having to do something like that when you'd rather have family time.  I guess it could end up being a great day out for all of you though, and you might meet some really cool people.  I have no doubt you will make the most of it, can't wait to hear all about it ; )

Maybe it was mentioned in the very small print? You never know, you might have a good time at the BBQ and meet lots of nice ppl. No harm in giving it a go!

You wait to you get him into kindy or school!!!  If you stay at home they hunt you down for all sorts of things!!!  Honestly just say that you can't do it right now.  I don't think they would charge you for not doing a shift but being the contact for our Playgroup, i know how desparate toy libraries are for volunteers.  Sometimes they have to close because they don't have enough people to run them.

Re: What have I got myself in for........???

Well, childcare are already wanting me to do a chocolate drive LOL.

They stated in the letter that it is $20 a term for not doing the shift and $80 if you don't want to do any shifts during the year.  A bit steep I reckon.  Already paid near $100 to join.

Re: What have I got myself in for........???

That is steep, i have heard Kindy's here do that...if you don't help out you forego a $25 levy or something....but i think it is still cheaper than child care anyway.
