Voting Gaming Reminder

Comment Published at 18:0218:027 comments7 comments153 Visits153 VisitsReport
Just a kind reminder about gaming the votes.

If you have not read this in the Voting Vault already, please do so. Please note that this group is a private group, but it is welcome for all members - just send a request to join in.

If you decide to target a member through voting, we can see who this is. What do we mean by targeting a member through voting?

What we mean by this is eg voting 5 articles in 20 minutes - as you all know, most articles are fairly lengthy on Minti and voting on 5 articles in a row within 20 minutes would mean that you took 4 minutes to completely read an article.

We would like you to actually properly read the article and digest it before voting.

In addition, another way of voting gaming using the same example is that if you voted eg 1 for all 5 articles that you 'read' in those 20 minutes... or alternatively, if you vote 5 for all 5 articles in the 20 minutes - that would be seen as suspicious.

In summary, we do encourage you all to vote what you think an article is worth. However, we do not accept voting that is done in a targeted fashion such as if you are trying to help a friend get higher votes on an article or improve their ranking. In the end, you will be caught and you will not be helping any one.

Re: Voting Gaming Reminder
I think that timing them like that is overkill, as I found that I could easily search for, read, comment (in detail) and vote in less time than this... The votes that I made were completely appropriate, and legitimate.  I didn't even read them fast, and I deliberated over my comments, as I always try to provide encouraging feedback - even to advice that barely rates as advice.

Can you tell whether less people are voting in general at the moment?  It sure seems that way... I think that anyone 'gaming the system' for votes is out of luck now anyway.  I have no idea how it all works, yet jumped up about 50 places in the last few weeks - so if someone has figured it out, they have way too much spare time - I feel sorry for them.

Re: Voting Gaming Reminder
That was an example for the slow readers... which most of my friends are. I'm actually a speed reader myself, so I read most of the articles within 2 minutes or less of each other. But I found the person who took over Minti while I was away actually wasn't a speedster like me and took a longer time to read all the articles to see if they were in breach.

But any how, what concerns me is that several people were voting 3 articles within 2 minutes, or an article every minute. Some of these people were also voting on specific people's articles, although I'm not sure whether this was intentional or not. So for example, if I was the voter, and I was voting on all your articles, it would look like someone was targeting eg 10 of your articles within 10 minutes.

The latter half of your comment is what concerns me too... Though it was a hard one to explain... I feel sure that someone would have to prepare by opening quite a few windows at once, and be really methodical about it.  It really is an art (that I haven't any interest in perfecting).

My articles are pretty long and laborious... Are you sure you'd be that fast?  JustJokes - I see your point, and I am glad that you guys are on the ball - however we need to establish some sort of workable scenario for everyone to feel comfortable.

Re: Voting Gaming Reminder
Yeah I totally agree. I think it's easier to judge if people are the slow reading types, but it's a bit hard if they're the speed reading types because then you don't really know whether they're just doing it to inflate or deflate votes, and then some other trouble will brew like someone will go, "Hey, ___'s articles are being targeted, let's hunt them down and get them!" or "Hey, someone keeps voting on ___'s articles, they're probably peer pressuring a newbie to vote up their articles" or something like that.
The only thing that I've thought of for now is to let people know to vote a wee bit slower and perhaps on different people's articles.

The only problem though is eg CookClan's tonnes of articles on drugs. Say one member is concerned their kid is on drugs and wants to know more about them... then goes through CookClan's drug articles and votes on all the ones they read. Someone could then say, "CookClan is being targeted" or "CookClan is pressuring someone to inflate/deflate her votes".

Where do we draw the line here so the negative/vicious rumours of someone being targeted or someone artificially inflating or deflating the votes will stop?

Hey Emz
That is 7.5 minutes per article. You must be a pretty slow reader !

Re: Voting Gaming Reminder
Actually, they were 1 vote on about 5 - 7 articles within 1 minute to 3 minutes of each other... the others were more acceptable.

We are encouraging people to vote, however they shouldn't do it to enhance people's ranks and things as we know some people were doing this before. Also, some people were targeting others to make their ranks fall down!
