FAQ: What is a cache?

Comment Published at 17:5817:582 comments2 comments33 Visits33 VisitsReport

Just to let those who are interested in what a cache is, it's an area of temporary storage area where frequently accesed data can be stored for faster access. It's faster to access than having the computer having to get the same information all over and over again.

So basically my thoughts are that if the cache is cleared, it means that the computer has to start a-fresh and get the new data (in this case, the new text editor).

For example, when the upgrade occurred I couldn't type any thing into my work computer. When I went home, I was able to - but probably because I don't really go on Minti at home. When I came back to work, I still had that problem. I was told to be patient while the editor downloaded, and I waited for a while but it didn't seem to download at all. Eventually I just cleared my temporary files, and the editor finally downloaded - really quickly.

Oops - I forgot to mention how to clear it for those who don't know how to! I have put links to instructions (depending on your browser) in here.

Re: FAQ: What is a cache?

Thanks for writing this up Angieh. I thought it was common knowledge but it seems to not be with so many people confused!! (then again I was with a computer programmer for 2 years LOL)

Re: FAQ: What is a cache?

Ahh mondays, I keep being forgetful. Another addition to the above:

For those who are still experiencing problems on commenting, etc when you are emailing or using the Contact Us bit of Minti, can you please confirm the following:

1) What browser and version you are using --> please check this by clicking Help, then About. For those who are running the old version of things, I would suggest that you update this ASAP. Updates for browsers are there usually to upgrade something or to fix security loopholes.

2) Whether you have the new toolbar in the text editor, or the old one. The text editor is the box where you type in to leave a comment or make a blog. Please confirm whether you have the old toolbar or the new toolbar. At the present time, you can tell whether you have the new one because well... firstly, it doesn't look like the old one. But other than that, the new one has these curvy arrows at the end of the toolbar.
