Trees help to cut-down asthma rates

Comment Published at 20:3020:303 comments3 comments42 Visits42 VisitsReport

I know there's a green movement at the moment where we are becoming more consciously aware in trying to save our planet. A good way is to plant trees. But trees can be annoying when they are planted where cars could actually park.

However, did you know that a study in New York just found that having more tree-line streets cut down asthma rates?

According to the news article, "Columbia University researchers found that asthma rates among children aged four and five fell by 25% for every extra 343 trees per square kilometre."

Something we should all be thinking about...

Re: Trees help to cut-down asthma rates

very interesting! I wonder if they mop up polution and that's why they help? Sadly tho we have loads of trees around here, I still have 2 asthmatics in the house and am watching DD2 to see if she develops a night-cough too.But they could always have it worse!

As for having somewhere to park (Im guessing this is a bug-bear of yours?) when I worked in London in 1995 during a heatwave I was always seeking out parking places under trees as I was driving all over to inspect parks and didnt appreciate coming back to a baking hot car; so well placed trees can be an asset to parking places (though dont park under ones which are being eaten by aphids - do you have that problem?)!

Yeah I thought it was an interesting piece of news. I guess it won't solve everyone's problems... but at least having trees out there is better than nothing even if it's just for our environments sake. Plus you could just grow nice fruit trees and get the benefits of that as well.

In regards to the trees taking up car parking space, I don't mind parking underneath a tree at all. What I mean by this is like... its a one way road, and the only way you can get parking is along that road. But periodically in the middle on the far left and right hand side are trees and poles so people don't hit the trees or i guess know how far to go before they could potentially hit one. They take up the size of a car, but they don't provide shaded protection for the cars - they're just there to look pretty.

I guess we dont look after the trees in England as well as you do - here the trees are pole-less and just get bumped! New trees have stakes tied to stop them falling over while they're top heavy from being planted, but I guess you dont mean stakes, I asume you mean bollards? I've bumped a few invisible ones of those in my time.
