I was hanging out with a doctor friend of mine on the weekend and I was telling her about some of the things happening on Minti. (Yes I know - I have no life!)
I told her that I remember reading about people's confusion about how eg you're not supposed to eat raw fish or sushi but they eat it any way in Japan. In France they don't worry about the whole unpasteurized cheese thing, they eat cheese and yogurt any way.
But in countries such as Australia, we seem pretty strict on what we can and cannot eat - which I'm sure some people feel is unfair especially if they have a bad craving for it.
And then my friend told me why we shouldn't be like the Japanese even though we both love our sushi and sashimi - apparently there has been an increase in parasitical diseases stemming from the Japanese diet, so unless we want our kids to have an increased chance of having these parasitical/water-borne diseases, we should just steer clear of sushi and sashimi until the 9 months is up!
Now I realise why my step-sister (also a doctor) steered clear of all her favourite foods even though I could tell that she really wanted it. The only bad thing with steering clear of all your favourite foods that you can't eat for 9 months is that your cravings will probably build up. |
