"just like babies"

Comment Published at 03:1403:1411 comments11 comments20 Visits20 VisitsReport

just finished baking "tsourekia" for the greek easter a lot of love and tender care its just like babies. we had to wait for the yeast and flour dough after  it was kneaded to "expand" it needed heat and we covered them in sheets and blankets and checked evry so often

we made 20 all up between the two of us. i normally would buy them because i usually work but this year i took the day off and set it aside just to bake them

i feel so good doing it. people were telling me why go through the fuss when you can buy them. but this way i know what ingredients go in them and besides i feel as if i have achieved something

not only that but when i give them out to friends and family i know i baked them with lots of love.

cheers annie

Re: "just like babies"

Home made is definately better! Like Arna said home made breas, yummo, we were making home made bread and I porked on the weight! I dont usually eat bread but since it smelled so so so good, and eating it fresh and warm. mmmm, I'm thinking I might have to make a loaf.

but yes, back to the acutal subject it is great that you made them, its all about tradition and you cant get much more traditional then making them by hand! Good on you, I'm sure all your friends and family will really appreciate it!

Home made foods always taste soooo much better.  My dad makes his own bread, and I can never get enough! lol.

And the best ingredient of all is love!

Re:

isnt home made bread so yummy? i have never made it but relatives have made it and ive eaten it at their house as well as been given some.

i will start baking that soon though. cakes i usually make but even the ladies i know that bake constantly keep "finding something new to try out"

i like it when i first make it with a friend who has already made it because sometimes its not only the ingredients thats important but the process  can make a difference

for example i didnt realise how much warmth the "tsourekia " needed to double in size. other women told me you have to be careful otherwise they mighten turn out the best.

but i knew i was "in good hands " with my sister in law and they were successful

i actually made some with my sisterin law guiding me . we made some round shaped and others long wise which you plait

cheers annie

I've never heard of "tsourekia" is that a greek custom delicacy???

I love baking, I just rarely actually get around to doing any, my Mum though bakes delicious fairy cakes every week though and the boys and I munch our way through them very quickly

tomorrow thursday , i will be painting my 'red eggs"

red is the most traditional. it represents the red blood tht jesus shed for us

i had so much fun and "i felt so good " after i finished "i know that when i give them to people that i did it all with that little bit of extra love

Re:

yeah i was so tired yesterday and i had blogged about the greek easter earlier. i got so excited when i saw you went through all the trouble to look it up.

it says keep in warm place for one hour til it doubles in size well its autumn here in melbourne and yesterday wasnt that warm. sunny but in the house cold. ideally some women even put  electric blankets on and place the tsourekia on the bed

but my sisterin law didnt have an electric blanket so we covered them in a clean sheet then blanketsafter 2 hours hadnt doubled so we turned the heater on.

my younger son (he is 25 ) has already his eye on one . he loves it  so does my older son

hubby and i eat them as well plus i will be giving some to friends and relatives

cheers annie

Re:

i forgot to mention there are different recipes around this recipe says all spice but what we use and i know most greeks use is "mahlepi" in greek or mahlep its a turkish spice

found in large quantities in turkey most delis sell it but it gives that "yummy taste"

Re: "just like babies"

Oh i love baking  Kylie has been bugging me the last few days to make her some cakes but heres just too much that needs doing i will do some soon though. Anyway things always taste much better if u bake them yourself other than buying them and you know exactly what is in them and you can sit back and watch the others enjoy them too.

Enjoy them

Re:

yeah ems i actually put the whole day aside for this . it was the most relaxing day because i wasnt rushing to go to work and i baked together with my sister in law she is older and "wiser " and makes things look easy especially in the baking department.

im actually finding it easier now that i dont have young children because i have always worked and everything has always been rushed

thats not to say i never baked but not as much as i would have liked to so now im going to work a little less. i am trying  to balance life a little because too much work = too much stress

kylie is a sweetie does she help make them with you?

have a great day cheers annie
