friday 27th of june 19980 at 10.07 am i became a mum for the first time .
yes thats right turn the clock back 28years. it was a friday too and for those that were old enough to remember thursday 26th of june 1980 was a train strike in victoria . how do i remember that? because my hubby was driving to work in blackburn that morning. we had been married for 9 months and hubby had only been in the country for 8 months.
he was driving my very first car which was a ford cortina two door 1969 model spray painted a metallic blue with a silver line (metallic was a new concept then) manual anyway through no fault of his own this car at the traffic lights in the opposite direction makes a right hand turn(hubby was going straight) she slammed into the car .
her excuse was that there was a truck along side her and she couldnt see but she proceeded to make the turn anyway go figure! anyway it was close to home hubby rang me from a pay phone. no mobiles in those days. i came down and the police wanted us to come to the station at our leisure to give statement.
the other driver was charged with failing to give way to the right but oh the inconvenience it caused. that was our one and only car and it was in for repairs. she didnt have insurance so she was paying us slowly on a monthly basis. she was from new zealand and she thought insurance was covered with car rego.
anyway remember it was a train strike so when we went to police station we walked. hubby wanted us to catch a cab but we had just bought our house and the car was in repairs and i was stressing so much knowing she had no insurance , so i wanted to walk to the police station to save the cab fare
is this madness. i was already nine days overdue and i was due to go to my gyno in the city the next day anyway so she could induce me for the weekend if he wasnt born.
anyway apparently that work must have helped bring on the labour because that night i was ironing (funny thing that i had the urge to iron and that also happened 2 years later when i was ready to give birth to our second son)
we had to call my brotherin law(my sisters hubby) to drive us into the city to the hospital it was 10pm thursday night.
hubby hated the smell of hospitals so it was a great effort for him. anyway hubby was told to go home and come back i morning. poor hubby had to train it . in the morning my gyno decided to break my waters as i was getting contractions but not much else.
i was given a gas mask but (i prbably wasnt breathing through it properly) but i didnt want it . it made me sick i had to have an epidural something i hadnt even contemplated on and my legs were put into stirrups as i had a forceps birth.
at one stage my stirrup came undone and i tried to do something there im not even sure what i was trying to do (its funny what different people do during birth) but i remember my gyno pushing my hand away saying i cant touch because my hands wernt sterilised.
anyway then the miracle happened i heard my baby cry and i was handed him to me.
i stayed in hospital for about 10 days all up. i went in on the thursday night and left monday 7th of july. i did endure stitches but there was a nurse that had given birth and i took her advice and was having salt baths. speedier recovery .
poor hubby was working in the northern suburbs and he would have to train it (he worked all over melbourne at the time) then he would visit me in hospital in the city and the train it again for home in the south east suburbs
those were the days we actually ended up buying our monaro LS which was also a two door but that was 8 cylinder. very poweful cars
so the alarm on my mobile will be set for 10.07 am and i will reflect. over the years my son (he knows he is born at 10.07am) he also looks at the clock at that time. my youngest was born at 5.25am but his story will come on the eve of his birthday
i really cant believe that it has been 28 years .
cheers annie
