Bouncing Along

Comment Published at 18:3018:3040 comments40 comments65 Visits65 VisitsReport

I've heard a lot about the benefits of the gym ball/ birthing balls, so started to form a plan of getting one and seeing if I could get the same results.  Said plan forming, I shared it with Les, who, the next time he was out, bought one for me.

It sat there for about 3 days before I finally got so uncomfortable last night, I decided to pump it up.  Les had better luck though, took me 30 mins and still got nowhere.  I guess men are just more full of hot air than we ever thought.

Ball pumped up and ready for experimentation.  Ok, now to try not look as though I am drunk.  Oops!  More unwanted wobbling.

Cut a long story short, I spent about 2 hours (on and off, had other things to do) bouncing and rocking away on the ball.  OMG!  I had not had relief like that for quite some time.  While I still have to use my own body weight to keep my from ending up on the floor, I could feel the pressure being eased off my back and pelvic region!  It was heaven!

Once I got comfy with just sitting and gently moving, I decided to experiment a bit further.  Poor knees, I now have to get a soft mat so that I don't end up with carpet burn.  This very simple, very plastic round thing is going to be great for when I'm in labour!  I tried many different ways of stretching and getting relief, and I think that as long as I don't feel any added pain, anything with this ball goes.

I even dragged it to the couch, had my lower back on the ball and upper back on the couch and oh!  What a way to get rid of back tension!  It was heaven! (seems to be the theme here! lol).

I can see why it is supposed to be great for burning fat though.  After just a few minutes of what seemed to me to be just sitting there trying not to act like a drunk pirate, I was sweating like the proverbial pig!  Oh wow, might work for darling Les, who's tummy seems to be outgrowing mine! (but there's more of him to keep me warm at night!).

Yep, I decided I finally needed to have a shower and les thought he would have a play with my new toy.  Notice I said My new toy?  Yeah, as much as I like sharing, I still had that 'mine' mentality going and had to stop myself from pushing him off it.   I told him so too, and he just laughed!  Bet he wouldn't have if I had pushed him off!

Les' verdict is that it will help to ease his backache too!  Great news for me!  No more spending hours knotting my muscles up! lol.  No, i love rubbing his back, but it isn't always enough.

So, I see I managed to give the long story after all.  Oops!

any preggy lady who is in pain, get one of these balls!  You don't have to be the most coordinated person in the world to use it and it really does work!  Take away your computer chair and use the ball instead!  It will mean you can spend longer here before needing a break! lol.

Oh the balls are great. I borrowed my dads exerise ball for this pregnancy and quite enjoyed having a little bounce around on it but it was BLISS in labour! I sat on one in the shower basically the whole labour! Cannot recommend it more!!

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter!!!!!

The ball is a godsend!  I so wish I had tried it with my other 4! lol.  Oh well, I at least have one now!  And yes, I will be using it in the shower if I can,but only at home, they aren't set up for such things at the hospital!

Re: Bouncing Along

Probably! lol.  I spent an hour the other night just hanging over it.  I almost fell asleep! lol.  Now that would have been funny.

I am noticing it is bringing on the braxton hicks contractions rather more intensely than I would like! lol.  They hurt now!

Re: Bouncing Along

Once I clear the junk from behind my computer chair, I'm going to have the ball here to use.  I can't stand the chair! lol.  I think the ball is going to be a great help when labour strikes (no political quips please! lol).

Re: Bouncing Along

I loved using my ball during the labours - it helped SOOOO much to bounce through the contractions! Glad you've got on well with yours already. DH even learned to do press-ups on his once. Been a long time since we used them for that though! Watch out - kids think they're space-hoppers though!

Re: Bouncing Along

I'm so going to be using mine when in labour! lol.  I just hope it doesn't make things go to quick though, as getting to the hospital last time nearly didn't happen!

Our girls had a whinge session yesterday because they wanted to play with it, but I just said it was Mummy's new chair and that they aren't allowed to touch.

Re: Bouncing Along

Hi Arna

I've got a gym ball, only used it once or twice and keep falling off, it's quite hilarious.  I didn't know it could be used as a birthing ball.  I'm supposed to be using mine to get fit but it's been sitting in a corner for over a month. Think you have got me inspired again, no, not to get pregnant, to get fit, lol.  Hope you and puggle are ok on the day, not long to go now.

Take care, love Maria xxxx

Re: Bouncing Along

Hey Arna,

Ive had my gym ball for ages and i get on it nearly everynight, it really helps my back. My bf teases me that i look funny on it rocking and rolling around but it relieves so much pressure and it helps get bubs down lower.

As soon as i have pains i get on it and bounce up and down hahaha, here in Melbourne, the hospital i go too use the balls in the birthing suites. They call them birthing balls hahahaha...

Well have fun on your ball and be careful on it, ive rolled off so many times hahaha..

Dannii xxo

Re: Bouncing Along

It was you saying before that it helped that made me decide to get one, and oh boy!  Instant relief! lol

The hospital here uses them too, but I go so quick they wouldn't have time to get it! lol.  But will be using it before going in!

I almost got spilt a few times, I'm going to blame it on my short legs! lol.

And yeah,  Puggle has moved a lot lower after just a couple of sessions.  I don't think she appreciated my laying on my belly though! lol.  Hey, the ball molds so not to uncomfortable.

Re: Bouncing Along

ROFL!  I'm getting to the stage where Les is going to have to help me in and out of the shower.  We have a shower/bath combo and the forward weight is not easy to go hurdle jumping with! lol.

You keep bouncing away.  It is really nice to have some relief!!!!!

ROFL.  I suppose they do take some taming, much like our men! lol.  Maybe a saddle and bridle would help?

Re: Bouncing Along

I have to say, Rukia would be right.  I did a sex experience course in my teens (just about how to get creative without turning it to a degrading level) and they did mention something about gym balls.

It really does help with the pain though.  Can't wait until the girls go to bed and I can have it in the lounge.  During the day, it is in the study and space is rather limited in there right now! lol.

Re: Bouncing Along

I've learned that I probably shouldn't wear a dress, especially my more slipery ones, because I slide off! lol.

I have heard they are good for that, not sure I'm game to try having 3 people using the ball at once though (including Puggle here! lol), but I'm sure once Les and I are more confident with our balance and control, we might give it a go. I know he wants to! lol.

we have 90% tiled house so it isnt safe there. i prefer it on carpet so it has a little friction to move ratherr that tile where it just slides

Re: Bouncing Along

Good point!  Its hard enough to balance without going skating at the same time! lol.  By the way, Les says he wants demo videos! rofl.  Cheeky sod he is! hhhmmm, I can see that, Rukia's guide to keeping the bounce going, but not in bed! lol.
